It’s a classic line from bosses/managers/owners who want to make you feel some regret/question yourself about leaving. I’ve left two jobs for a better offer and my explanation when asked was, if you won’t give it to me on your own, I don’t want it from you. If I would stay for more money, I ask for a raise without any mention of leaving. Every time they’ve told me they can’t afford it, times are tough, we all need to work hard and maybe in a year we can revisit it. I just said this isn’t a negotiating tactic, it is what it is, my notice that I’m quitting. honestly, i’ve finessed 4 raises in the past 2 years by straight up lying to my boss about having an offer from another company. didn’t ask for a raise, knew i didn’t need to. i know my worth, and as i work in sales- i have the highest KPIs for my department. they never offered to give me a raise in spite of being one of the best in our company so i forced their hand. boss is kind of scummy, but all my coworkers are nice and the benefits/environment make it worth my while staying there.
