Even my current students, who are K-6, like to chat and for the Bruno Sammartino Italian-American professional wrestler Retro Bootleg T-Shirt moreover I love this youngest ones, just play a bit. That’s what I like because I know the impact that has on them. The teacher of the year for my DISTRICT is a dude, at my school actually (dude deserves it, but he is the theater teacher, so I feel like he has a few breaks that other teachers don’t get). I rarely get recognized by students or staff, but my position is unusual (formerly new social studies teacher, now unwilling avid elective teacher and coordinator). Honestly, I’d rather the anonymity currently because I am leaving my district this year for another that will hopefully allow me to actually teach what I studied to teach. You’re only in your fifth year. You have a long career ahead of you and hopefully you will receive an acknowledgement of your dedication and talents in the future, but it’s not particularly helpful to dwell on things that amount to a popularity contest. I am a male teacher as well. It is often difficult to disentangle how students respond to your gender from other aspects of yourself.
Bruno Sammartino Italian-American professional wrestler Retro Bootleg T-Shirt: Perfect for Fans
It’s so tough. The kids obviously need a male role model and I’m happy to provide it but it bothers meHonestly the Bruno Sammartino Italian-American professional wrestler Retro Bootleg T-Shirt moreover I love this best accolade you can receive, is when you see a grown adult, acting like you are a movie star…you will be in a dazed confusion…and then this adult will say…Mr…so and so, it’s me…(the thousands of lives you’ve influenced)..and you’ll say…wow…you’re driving now…or you’re doing whatever adult thing the former student is doing..and then you realized you’ve made your mark on the world. This happens a lot and you’re right. I saw two kids at the grocery store that told their coworkers I was the best teacher. he thousands of lives you’ve influenced)..and you’ll say…wow…you’re driving now…or you’re doing whatever adult thing the former student is doing..and then you realized you’ve made your mark on the world. Agreed…..Your impact will often go unseen…..A lot of students as expected can be self absorbed and don’t realize the impact until they are given perspective. Know that what you do is changing the lives of kids in ways you will not realize. I’m sure there are students in your classroom that have really rough homelives…and your consistency may be the only thing in their life…those kids usually don’t broadcast that.
Teacher of the Bruno Sammartino Italian-American professional wrestler Retro Bootleg T-Shirt moreover I love this year is a popularity contest, and means absolutely nothing. I’ve never seen the best teachers get chosen, as they choose to spend their work time focusing on students, and not inserting themselves into others’ gossip and drama. I recommend to stop caring about that fake award. As a male with almost 2 decades experience- I can say that the students who NEED you there as a stable male person in their lives are also rarely the ones to get involved and nominate anyone for anything. But, without you there for them they’d struggle. The best recognition is from individual students. They’ll let you know, sometimes subtly. Never doubt that. Kids know sincerity and care when they see it. I’m a male teacher, 11 years into special education at the middle school level. 6 years ago I got teacher of the year. Also 6 years ago I was 1 of 2 RSP teachers at a school of 1300 students. Half way through the year the other RSP teacher quit, leaving me to fly solo. I had 37 on my caseload that year, held 23 triennial assessments + 14 regular IEPs, taught 3 different grade levels of remedial math, and pushed into two classes of co-taught math with one prep period.

What did I get from all this? My name stamped into a two inch brass plate posted on a wall at a district I no longer work for which I’m pretty sure I got voted for out of sympathy because my job was shit that year and I did the Bruno Sammartino Italian-American professional wrestler Retro Bootleg T-Shirt moreover I love this best I could with cards I was dealt. But more importantly, I got perspective. I’d rather see kids make progress and come to terms with their learning goals than them like me and vote to be their favorite. And I sure as shit, don’t give a flying fuck about teacher of the year anymore. Like others have said, student-based teacher recognition generally goes to the teacher with the big personality who lets kids screw around. I’m fine with this as I hear directly from kids and families how I impact them and there’s real value in kids having relationships with different kinds of adults. What I’ll add is that colleague-based recognition often feels unbalanced and political. I swear I don’t expect my peers to thank me for doing my job, but it gets frustrating when it’s the same handful of people who are always thanked/awarded and you’re instructed to applaud. More than once I’ve been told to applaud someone else for work I either collaborated with them on or full on just did myself. You also notice how celebrations and care aren’t equally extended. Some people get meal trains and gift cards when they’re experiencing illness or loss, while others don’t even get a condolence card. Likewise, some get baby showers, others get squat.
I’m not gonna lie, this has not been my experience. But it might be the Bruno Sammartino Italian-American professional wrestler Retro Bootleg T-Shirt moreover I love this grades I teach. I’m a man teaching elementary school so everyone fucking loves me. I’m like a unicorn. Do what you want to do to satisfy the curriculum and your own integrity, but don’t ever expect anything in return or even anyone to notice. The faster you acknowledge that, the happier you will be. Having your name called and getting a round of applause at a faculty meeting is literally meaningless; you don’t get paid more, your job doesn’t get easier, you don’t get a free vacation, it’s just people golf-clapping and saying “yup, he’s a teacher too!” Don’t lose focus of what you do. If you enjoy the way you run your class, and it’s working, that’s worth more than being recognized for it. If you can show up to work and make it through a day, a week, a month or even a whole school year without dreaming of quitting, you’re way ahead of most of us. Having someone tell you you’re doing a great job shouldn’t factor in to how you feel about the job. Here’s a quick example: I work with a teacher who won the Milken award. She got $20k and the goddamn commissioner of education was there and we had a massive assembly. Go ahead and google the Milken family, and their history. This is one of the biggest awards and forms of recognition you can get as a teacher, and…look where that financial award is coming from. These people are worth billions of dollars, but thanks for the $20k that you probably used to launder your money anyways, I guess?
Just saying. Recognition as a teacher is not always what it seems. Keep doing what you do for yourself and for your students, and block out all the Bruno Sammartino Italian-American professional wrestler Retro Bootleg T-Shirt moreover I love this other stuff, because that lack of recognition that you crave right now will eventually cause you to resent the entire profession – because it’s never coming. Let me tell you a little story… I remember wanting to be teacher of the year. One year I was determined. I participated in EVERY SINGLE COMMITTEE. I volunteered to chaperone any and all after school events. All my stuff was in on time or early. Came in early. Stayed late. Anyone needed anything and I was all over it. Kids were in a design challenge and I showed them how to use 3D modeling software to make virtual models (this was back in 2010 so kind of a bigger deal). I would offer feedback when asked, volunteered to be the PTA liaison, and served on the admittance committee to the school. Went to any PD and turn-keyed it. Then when the kids were upset their field trip got canceled because of weather (snow) I organized another one, fund raised thousands of dollars for it myself, and got it approved (overnight to DC). I implemented a student of the month initiative, and pretty much did every single thing I could think of to stand out and make the biggest impact I could. Day of the announcement comes and I’m all excited. The principal goes onto say this person has really made a big impact and stepped up this year yada yada yada. The whole time I’m like… this is me… omg this is me. Then she reads someone else’s name. Now I’m crushed but I’m like… ok maybe this other person did a lot too… I’m sure I’m not the only one… other people do a lot too.
Cut to 2 weeks later. A student in my class has a green ball, a little bigger than a boccii ball he is throwing from hand to hand. I walk over and ask him to stop. Then I look at it and ask where he got it from. Turns out he was in a class and the Bruno Sammartino Italian-American professional wrestler Retro Bootleg T-Shirt moreover I love this teacher in that class doesn’t actually teach anything, so he’s been taking rolls of electrical tape every day for months and making this ball bigger and bigger and bigger. In class… just sitting there… making it bigger and bigger and bigger, apparently out in the open. Every day he just shows up, takes it out of his bag, and wraps it more and more. Take a guess which teachers class this is? That’s right… teacher of the year. The student likes me so he offers it to me (I think he thought he was going to get in trouble if he didn’t) so I take it to another teacher in my department. I show it to her and explain and then I’m asked her why on earth he got teacher of the year…
Turns out the Bruno Sammartino Italian-American professional wrestler Retro Bootleg T-Shirt moreover I love this principal forgot to get a rep for a district level committee. Teacher of the year had off last period and took a nap in his van, over slept, and forgot to sign out and collect his check from his mailbox. He went in, she saw him and asked him to volunteer for one committee… and boom a teacher of the year is born. The moral of the story is… don’t feel too bad. It could just come down to someone walking into the office at the right time and the principal needing a name to write on the paperwork. I know a school where the teachers who are chosen for appreciation are always males… the ones who were in the same fraternity as the principal lol Only about 25% of teachers are male in the United States. What percentage of teachers get chosen for the thing you’re talking about?
At least in the Bruno Sammartino Italian-American professional wrestler Retro Bootleg T-Shirt moreover I love this US, male public school teachers earn between 10 to 13 percent more than their female counterparts. Just, you know, while we’re on the topic of the difference between the appreciation male and female teachers are given. Back to making the kids the focus and knowing I’m making a difference with or without the awards. Awards aren’t my why. Thank you all for helping me find it again. Don’t stack yourself up against other teachers — they might be the teacher of the year, but who knows if they’re the best teacher. Focus on yourself! Good luck!! My predecessor was known throughout the building as “Mama Lastname” and frequently had admin praise and a cabinet full of awards for various concerts and events. Children would come for hot tea, blankets, and some cookies if she had some that day.
I had students who were the Bruno Sammartino Italian-American professional wrestler Retro Bootleg T-Shirt moreover I love this meekest children you’ve ever met stand up and call their own parents out publicly for bad behavior, looking to me for support. Children who when I met them couldn’t look you in the eye who then went on to give an all out drop dead performance with the jazz band at a restaurant in front of strangers. Students who quashed rumors of music being an “easy” class because “No you don’t understand, for the first time I’m actually learning to read music!” When I announced I was moving, there were tears for months. I left with a briefcase full of cards, small gifts, and note cards with student info so they could follow me on social media when they were old enough. My coworker friends send me updates on students I’ve taught as they finish high school and go on to whatever life has for them.
I’m also in my 5th year teaching, and I’ll tell you now I don’t think I have a chance in hell of getting any sort of recognition like teacher of the Bruno Sammartino Italian-American professional wrestler Retro Bootleg T-Shirt moreover I love this year, etc. I’m not that great of a teacher, on paper. But seeing the impact you’ve made on kids over time, that’s the reward for me. I get weepy thinking about some of those kids. This got kinda preachy kinda fast and I’m sorry. Hopefully this whole thread has perhaps showed you a different perspective on the recognition you absolutely deserve, just maybe not from where you’re expecting it. At my high school, this year’s TOTY was male, a P.E. teacher. He is kind to students. He was very understanding with the SpEd students. A substitute teacher who had graduated from the high school even asked me about him. He had good memories of him. The teacher’s a good guy, good at being a P.E teacher, has been at the school for a long time, and guess what? I really don’t remember what he was rewarded for the honor. Maybe a certificate?
Men are also underappreciated. No one ever thanked my Dad for going to work and no one probably will. Ask your students if they love Mom or Dad more. If I have a problem that can’t change, then it stops being a problem and starts simply being part of my environment. I doubt any of this will get easier for you. I hope you get stronger. Dude… don’t sweat it. I’ve never won an official award or been recognized publicly. But I do have students regularly come back to say hi and thanks once they’ve been out in the Bruno Sammartino Italian-American professional wrestler Retro Bootleg T-Shirt moreover I love this “real world” for a bit. Those are the best forms of recognition I enjoy. When you do things the right way, people will wonder if you’re doing anything at all. I’m 10 years in and get my recognition by fist bumps in the hall from former students. Can’t compare your teachers who don’t do crap. Of could kids will love that.
it sounds like you’re doing a great job. keeping up with all of that is hard and not every teacher is doing so. this is just your job. it’s a just a dumb award and these things always go to popular teachers, not necessarily good ones. I’m a male teacher. I definitely don’t find myself in the Bruno Sammartino Italian-American professional wrestler Retro Bootleg T-Shirt moreover I love this “in crowd” among my coworkers nor do my admin ever acknowledge my work, despite having really strong connections to students – especially high behavior and low attendance students. That being said – I will also say male privilege is SO noticeable in this job. I have such good relationships with tough kids in large part because I’m male. Classroom management is easier when male. So I’ll gladly quietly accept my male privilege and ignore the fact that I don’t get acknowledged by admin or coworkers. It’s just a job anyway, and half of my “popular” peers are the gossip-y type that are re-living their high school glory days, anyway. Male teacher here. I disagree with your premise: I think males are rare in our professor and get overchosen and overpraised for doing equal “good” work. Similarly to fatherhood – I’m a “good” dad, but people treat me like I’m an amazing dad. Most of what they base this opinion off is stuff any mother does. As for lack of acknowledgement, make peace with it. Think of pay and benefits as your reward. Use it to buy yourself (or your kid) a small treat or some edibles.
I don’t think that has anything to do with you being a male teacher. Simply put, most teachers do NOT get any sort of accolades or recognition. Don’t take it personal or overthink it. This is the Bruno Sammartino Italian-American professional wrestler Retro Bootleg T-Shirt moreover I love this type of job where you have to celebrate your own successes cuz no one else is gonna do so. Male math teacher 20 years. Never once recognized by the school. I never thought about being recognized. I don’t do it for awards. I do it because I enjoy the job. I enjoy teaching math. I enjoy all the challenges and newness everyday brings. I enjoy seeing students succeed and seeing the ah-ha moments. if you are teaching for awards or recognition you’re in the wrong business. That might seem mean to some, but it’s the truth. No, I totally agree and I feel that way, too. I just struggled this last week. That’s not mean, that’s realistic and honest.
A lot of teachers quit by year 5. If you can make it to 10, you can go all the Bruno Sammartino Italian-American professional wrestler Retro Bootleg T-Shirt moreover I love this way unless you have trouble with “things can’t get any worse”. Like my current struggle is the “ground hog day” of every year. Oh, I have to guide another student through their academic downslope. I have to wait on another student to understand that them not liking school and obtaining a diploma are two separate issues. Not so much that I came into that for the recognition but that this particular school year is grinding on me and I would’ve liked to have it. It’s neither petty nor weak to desire or even need recognition for your work. We’ve just built a culture that teaching “shouldn’t” be done for recognition or livable pay but for passion and the love of the kids, which is nothing and doesn’t pay our bills or develop our careers as professionals. I deserve to be recognized for doing good work and I especially deserve it when I go above and beyond. It’s just good employee management and retention.
There was a teacher at my school who campaigned vigorously for her two “Best Teacher” apple awards. It was more about politicking than student appreciation. You may never know how you impacted a student’s life for the Bruno Sammartino Italian-American professional wrestler Retro Bootleg T-Shirt moreover I love this better. Before I left the field I did my best to create a love for lifelong learning in all students. In USA we don’t appreciate the real sacrifices teachers make to be the best we can be. Give yourself a reward! Sometimes it is better than being noticed. CONGRATULATIONS on doing such a great job! Here’s my heartfelt reward to you! You know what. As a Sub, I’ve tried just about every discipline available to me that I think I can do and not make matters worse. The place I’ve felt the most appreciated: Kindergarten. I get lots of attention, I make a lot if new friends.
Yeah, I’ll never get Teacher of the Bruno Sammartino Italian-American professional wrestler Retro Bootleg T-Shirt moreover I love this Year, but seeing those Kinders faces light up when they see me is more fulfilling than any award I got during my 30 years of working in IT. Teacher recognitions rarely come with any type of bonus or incentive, so I couldn’t care less about them. Lol I’ve gotten teacher of the month a couple of times and don’t even know where they are. ETA: Not only are they usually pointless, but they sometimes come with more work. I was nominated for teacher of the year and was so relieved when I didn’t win. I had no desire to have to be submitted for the district level competition where you have to write a paper and submit a video. It’s nice to be appreciated but at the end of the day you don’t do it for appreciation. You do it for the money… wait we are teachers. We don’t even do it for that. Why are even doing this?
I don’t do it for recognition. But I’m a male teacher and I thought I worked really hard. Never got recognition and was literally forgotten about at my first school. Then moved to high school in a new district and won teacher of the Bruno Sammartino Italian-American professional wrestler Retro Bootleg T-Shirt moreover I love this year in year 13. That felt nice, but even that is just a Pat on the back. Did your students have a dependable education provided every day? Could they rely on you? Did you work to help them out when needed? Sounds like a winner to me. The irony is, when I won teacher of the year in my school, the principal told me it’s “a lot of work” to move up to the district level Teacher of the Year award process. I looked at the requirements. It was nuts. Like you have to film yourself teaching (“Look at me! Look at me!”) and ask other colleagues to write you recommendation letters. There was basically like 10+ extra hours of work just to apply. You have to want it! It’s so political! Made me look at people who win the district-wide TOY and state level awards MUCH differently. I didn’t want all that shit.
