I do so much volunteer work in my early 20’s, and was taken advantage of by so many people willing to exploit my volunteering/free labor. I just, fuck that. I mean, it depends on the kind of crowd they will host. But yeah, doing security should not be “volunteer” work when you are sticking you neck out for the safety of others. What a crock of shit. I would report the music festival. They’re probably claiming they have security for their festivals and then pulling this. Their patrons aren’t safe and they’re probably pocketing the security funds themselves. If you haven’t seen the Woodstock 99 documentary, they do something similar using a volunteer security force and it’s just about what you’d expect would happen.

I might consider “volunteering” to get free tickets to the festival, but I’m not confiscating a flask or breaking up a fight in the mosh pit. if it is band you want to see then just volunteer so you get free admission then just do half ass work and just watch band. tix probably cost couple hundred for festival For small fests, it works. For the bigger ones nowadays they will shut off your wristband if you dont show up to shifts. They tried making people put down a deposit on a ticket in the past but people just considered it a cheap ticket. Shut off your wristband? What’s that even supposed to mean? Will it stop you from hearing the music? Besides, who’s going to stop you? Security? I volunteer at a festival once a year in return for a ticket (8 hours of easy work in exchange for a $450 ticket + staff meals) and if you don’t turn up to your shift they shut off the RFID tag on your wristband that’s used to scan into certain things and areas. They also sometimes put up an array of funny “wanted” posters around the festival which make great keepsakes when the wanted individual is a mate. However at this festival the volunteer work is all easy low risk stuff and anyone doing high risk work such as security are paid appropriately I’ve done this honestly tickets sold out so I got a staff security gig and got in for free hung out near the stage made sure people didn’t get on stage is all I cared about I’ve done this but the shifts were much shorter and the point was to get free camping and tickets. Worked out great and I would absolutely do it again. But it was a small local festival, no way I’m giving LiveNation anything.
