I’m incredibly hyper aware of my surroundings, especially under stress, and I have a natural talent at driving (or so I think, knock on wood). So I can anticipate most things on the road, and have backup plans for what happens. My feet and hands are always ready to change if I need to turn, slow down, etc. I’m not condoning this behaviour, and I discourage it, but God is it fun. Unless it’s an emergency, I find drivers like that incredibly stupid and unsafe. For what, to save 3 seconds because you want to go faster. The worst ones are tail gators especially in traffic, like what do you want me to do go faster when there is traffic jam? Drive like that in snow or slippery rain, you’ll crash. I’m talking to you California drivers!!!

In my accord, you feel the speed much more; 60 mph feels like 60 (some vibration, wind noise picks up, etc.). In the Tesla I’ve found myself up to 80 or 90 barely realizing how fast I’m going because it’s so much smoother and easier to accelerate. I’m mindful of it so I only go as fast as I feel is safe and warranted, but I have a better appreciation and understanding of how some people may speed without fully realizing it I wouldn’t say that I have a death wish. But I don’t NOT have a death wish. Plus when I’m ripping over triple digits I’m scared and it makes me feel alive. It’s the closest to feeling alive I’ve had since coming back from Iraq. Look, I’m a single lawyer college prof in his 40’s. I’m pretty much a loser. No one gives a shit about me aside from my daughter. She’s the only reason I wear my gear when I do it.

Not to be facile or glib, but it’s clear who showed up for virtual learning during Covid, and who played video games. Those in the latter group have been falling behind more and more each year. And because they missed huge chunks of mathematics foundations, they are lost. And because they’re lost, they get anxious and stay home. So they miss even more school. They don’t ask for help because they don’t want their peers to know they’re confused. If I ask them to work with me in a small group so I can check their understanding, they do so reluctantly, even when I pull all students into small groups so that no one feels targeted. Our board has been using Google Classroom since before Covid, but kids still can’t figure out how to check it for work posted while they’re away.
Another repercussion from Covid is that being online for extended periods meant that so many students did not have a chance to develop social skills. I think a lot of it has to do with everything being done on a computer. Now I will be honest, I can’t do math in my head and never could, I have to work things out on paper. But, I went to school before computers were a thing. It’s like people are trying to get everything in the real world over with so they can return to their addiction. It is a multigenerational problem. Yes kids are behind but I don’t blame schools. I would argue that adults are just as behind or have regressed to a teenage level of identity crisis based on the media they consume.

My daughter knows what an even number is, what colors mixed together will look like, her parents names, phone numbers and addresses. I read books to her till she started reading on her own. She goes to a very highly ranked school luckily and has a mom who limits screen time and encourages crafts. My friends kids are way behind in school and have severe attitude issues. I’d like to think my friends limit screentime and play with their children but I cannot be certain. I know covid was a huge factor but I genuinely wonder what they’re doing in elementary and middle school and why they keep promoting students who aren’t meeting grade level requirements in June. I tutor college students, and all of these issues apply to some college students. In Harvard 80% of students get an A, while an A- is grounds for complaints and administrative actions against the professor. I slept through high school calc with a B average, never memorized multiplication tables, and never used that shit again.
