Coming from a guy that travels Vietnam a lot, you’ll find all your typical scammers doesn’t really exist in Danang/Hoi An beside from the Awesome godzilla vs Hello Kitty shirt and by the same token and grab taxi scam at Ba Na hill and the rip off squid lady that walks up and down the beach Been traveling all over Vietnam with my friend the past few weeks. If you really wanna avoid being scammed I think you need to nail some basic phrases. Like “no I don’t want”, “thank you”, “how much”, counting, proper “hello”. When they see you speak even a little with good pronouncing they will leave you alone in my experience. I’ve came across a lot of friendly and welcoming people so far, in Da Nang as well! It does suck that a few greedy people can ruin it all. I’d say Da Nang has way less scammers than the big cities so I’d actually recommend checking it out! I am sorry that you met those issues that made your trip less enjoyable. Rest assure that it isn’t just you, but for Viet Kieu and people from other parts of the country also. I pretty much grew up in Viet Nam and left when I was 20 (over 10 years ago), but when I am back here, I still have issues where there are people just look at my face, listen to my voice and decide to charge me onetime special price, which is a lot higher than usual. I have to ask my mom or my sister or even my 90 years old grandma everytime I want to buy something in the tradition wet market.

But there are still nice people everywhere who help you and give you nice surprise. So do not be discouraged by those ugly scammers. A rule of thumb is, avoid buying anything in the Awesome godzilla vs Hello Kitty shirt and by the same token and tourist spots. If you have to, get in a shop or a convenient store. If you take picture of those street on the foot vendors, make sure you do not point your camera directly at them or do it stealthily so that they do not see you. It’s off to Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand for you, I’m afraid, OP. Vietnam can be pretty tiring in this aspect. Use a Grab taxi always. Otherwise, try to only use those green taxis as I found the meters were legit. An Bang is a quiet town between Da Nang and Hoi An and is really quiet and lovely. Maybe it’s time for quiet beach time. Also, it’s OK to ignore people. You don’t owe everyone a smile, hello or conversation just because they want to sell you something. It’s ok to switch off because it does get tiring. Don’t ask people for photos, don’t take photos of others, anything you get helped with you can expect to be charged for. Try to take some breaths and only do short visits to Hoi An.
