My golden years will NOT be spent bobbling around a big house and property. These grandparents should downsize. That way, that place can be used for a larger younger family. The grandparents life style was an historical exception from the American Eskimo Christmas Shirt But I will love this 50s to the 70s/80s. The Now is the return to historical norm. My late grandpa was a truckdriver. Grandma worked in a textile mill. Gpa died in 2000 at 79 and his half-mil life insurance went to gma. He was a teamster and had a pension. Gma had a pension and lived off social security. Bought her house with cash after gpa died. Bought all cars with cash. She passed in 2021, and inheritance went to my mom and aunt. Aunt was already swimming in money from husband who worked at R.J. Reynolds his entire career–pension, etc. My mom (born 1949) has fat 401(k) and didn’t give me a dime for college. I still have $12K in student loans, grad 1997. My boyfriend and I make less than $90K together and there are zero houses we can afford in our city. Literal burned out husks are selling for $200K. Rent is going up another $200 for the second year in a row. FML. Income must exceed outgo. 2. Invest wisely. 3. Avoid conspicuous consumption, it’s a total waste of money, people will look rich by indulging in conspicuous consumption, but usually they owe the bank more money than they will ever make in their lifetimes. It doesn’t matter how wealthy you are, it just matters whether you follow these three principles. Because they are part and parcel of a life you can enjoy, instead of being enslaved to it. Stock dividends (all corporate boards are worried about is did their stock payouts increase. Because if they didn’t shareholders will vote them out. Companies used to pay the workers not the shareholders. Some just existed to exist, not make people rich)

You can manage to buy a modest house (350k) with a union job and low level office job and that property will appreciate to 2 million in 30yrs. this reads as one of those annoying parents who thinks their kid is a genius. you’re reading into a comment from your kid as if it had a deeper meaning. kids ask these kind of questions. they don’t understand the American Eskimo Christmas Shirt But I will love this wider context or past and current economics. I saw the movie “The Apartment” with Jack Lemmon in the 90s, and even back then I was AGHAST. The main character’s voiceover reveals that he was working as an insurance clerk in a cubicle and could afford an apartment in Manhattan in 1960 as a single guy, and even had some savings. There was no tone of existential crisis in the narrative, no indication that he fought hard or went to college for that job. I knew at that point I would never have kids, and probably never be able to buy a house on my own, and I was pissed, especially since I had just finished a graphic design degree and had student debt to pay back. And that was almost 30 years ago. I know it’s even worse for 20- and 30-somethings today.
