I agree with the others saying find a way out, a new job, but I also hate the idea that the victim has to lose a job to fix it. So, I have a method with dealing with people like that. As hard as it is, when dealing with any kind of bastard, it’s helpful to try to get in their mind, so you can mount the most effective defense or offense. Here’s the part where I get downvotes: Very few people think they are evil. They think they are saving the world. I think mental health has to catch up to what people are experiencing, but other that actual psychopaths, most people think they are Doing Good. And if you try to figure out how they think they are doing good, it can give you a tremendous advantage in 1. Feeling better, less guilty about the situation 2. Giving you more awareness of how to deal with those kinds of people and 3. If it goes to court, you have a lot more to say based on fact. I had one terrible colleague who caused many students to come to me to ask how to deal with him. I’d ask over and over “What good is he trying to do.” With a lot of talking it came out that most students agreed, that jerk wants to make his students less stupid, and he also wants to feel like a good professor for his students and family. But wow, that does not excuse him from ridiculing students, So now you have methods and facts. And then that bastard can be corrected or reported with a much stronger argument. I’ve found this “how do they think this is good” to be very useful.
