Next, you have to consider employment setting. The most underpaid therapists are those who work in community healthcare settings. These are clinics that provide care to people from underserved communities, most of whom either have no insurance or are on Medicaid/Medicare. For example, I personally make a comfortable six-figure salary in a hospital/medical school job (where I see patients and teach/train other clinicians) and I also have a private practice on the Women in STEM Long the 29% T-Shirt and by the same token and side where I charge $200-300 per hour to patients who pay out of pocket (without their insurance).
