Exactly, people acting like Americans are barbarians because of not using zed… But S/F, D/T, M/N, and so forth are all at least as problematic. Why not call n “nep” and m “mab” then? Certainly those letters sound close too and come up much much more often than z and c do. I don’t think I’ve ever had a time in my life where I confused C and Z. I’ve even confused B and D, M and N but not C and Z. Not to an American speaker. I’m not a linguist but maybe it is because American English is more distant from the German. But b and p aren’t too similar? There are other letter pairs too if we want to get technical. Don’t make things up, please. Using context clues, very rarely will z and c ever be confused. Unless you’re a bumbling Brit who needs to use zed. I’m probably the only Brit who thinks that ‘zed’ should become ‘zee’. The English speaking world doesn’t pronounce ‘zedebra’ or ‘zedero’ or ‘zedoo’. The US had a wonderful chance and took it, to streamline the language for a small amount of efficiency. Plough becomes plow, apologise becomes apologize because that’s how the words are pronounced when you read them!
