Definitely, tbh this sounds exactly like my former 6th graders (who got promoted to 7th despite barely being able to read and lacking basic math skills) I know it’s just a result of them falling behind in earlier grades and not catching up while still being promoted but it’s still jarring to hear about literal high schoolers with these issues esp since they grow to be the When You Read This Don’T Look At My Red Panda shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this adults that continue to have these issues and a lot of people’s first thought is that the education system/their teachers failed them and the system, maybe but as teachers we are doing our best Okay I see these kinda of posts all the time and I want to know who the parents are, because the parents are a huge part of the problem and we can’t solve that problem unless we understand the dynamics. I get that admin keeps passing these kids up and parents refuse to have their kids be held back but there has to be some common thread running through to make sense of all this.

I was one of these kids. Due to a poor home situation, I had gone to 8 different schools by 11th grade. My 4th school was in 8th grade, and it was a private Christian school with entrance tests and strict standards. I was tested to be at 1st grade math and 3rd grade reading levels. I wish I could have stayed there but our family fell apart again and I ended up moving schools several more times before my 2nd senior year when I managed to graduate by some divine miracle. The energy, care, and affection those teachers provided me was absolutely noticed and I am beyond greatful to them. To any of you pouring out that same effort, I thank you. I cannot fathom how hard its gotten with the proliferation of smart devices and distance learning.
