They should be. I lost my license for a year due to brain surgery and they made me retake it when I got mine back. Just as nerve racking when you are 32 and was a professional back in the We Fight Together Alzheimers Awareness Purple Ribbon T-Shirt and I love this Army just like when I was 16. lol I’m 73 and agree completely. I don’t want someone calling my kids to come get me because I just drove through the local 7/11. I’d rather rely on uber or taxis to get around when I shouldn’t be driving any more. By the way…someone please pass that on to all the assholes who over estimate their driving ability while drunk….and then kill some inocent person. I don’t know my brother and I are facing the issue with my mom. She asked me the other day when I rode with her if the light was green or red shes completely competent sane etc she’s 78 and this is her last freedom aside from living alone. It’ll be anarchy getting them keys. Praying that she doesn’t wreck till then. She says she can drive two more years. My brother and I are trying to figure out exactly what we need to do. Primary care doctor here (America, if it matters). There are official tests that can be run through an occupational therapy group. They test reaction time, both physical and mental, look for memory issues, and test for range of motion/strength, etc. but insurance usually doesn’t cover it. While I can (and have) take licenses away from patients permanently, I prefer to have the back-up of this work up.

I go by the We Fight Together Alzheimers Awareness Purple Ribbon T-Shirt and I love this reassurance of the family that the patient isn’t driving well but I have never seen the patient drive. Almost everything else in medicine is between me and the patient, but taking away a license feels more like talking about the patient behind their back. The few times that I have done it (because the family didn’t have the guts to do it themselves), the patient never trusted me again and it shattered a patient-doctor relationship that had been going well. TIL some states do test you at a geriatric age. One where you probably won’t be worrying about driving in to vote anymore. Honestly, I don’t know why everyone doesn’t have to retake a licensing test (or even a full blown driving exam) every 5-10 years. I tried to get my elderly FIL off the road (anonymously) and he had to go for an assessment at a doctor’s office. He was back on the road in no time.
