I stayed with a Polish friend over new year once. Not sure if this is a widespread custom, but in her town the Vintage Did I Mention I’m Retiring Soon Fishing T-Shirt moreover I love this local Catholic priest tours the town a few days into January wishing his parishioners well. A few households volunteer to provide snacks along the way including my friend’s family. So the priest comes in to chat, and he gives us all a little card with a saint and a prayer on it. They presumably explain to him that I’m visiting from England. He then says something to me in Polish (which I don’t understand) and holds out his hand. I found out afterwards he wanted to check which prayer card he had given me. But I…… shook the priest’s hand. Turns out this is not the done thing! Thankfully they all, including the priest, burst out laughing and I imagine to this day they’re telling the tale of the crazy English girl who shook the priest’s hand.

Went to say excusez-moi to the Vintage Did I Mention I’m Retiring Soon Fishing T-Shirt moreover I love this lovely french woman who owns the the pizza restaurant in Brides-les-bains but because I know slightly more Italian (like 4 more words and very little of each) I shouted SCUZI at her like the scene in Inglorious Bastards I was trying to buy a hangover cure called Underberg in a bar in Holland. I got the name mixed up and asked her for Underbrook. Which means I asked her for her underwear. Didn’t go down well at the time but she laughed after thankfully. Drunk, fancied a kebab. Rotisserie across the street. Chickens going around on spits, oh yeah, Ile have 1 of them pls. Get down the road a bit, unwrap one end and sink my teeth straight into the nostrils and bone of a sheeps head. Not nice.
