I got into it with some homeschool parents on a subreddit a few days ago and thought the Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt in addition I really love this dust had settled. Got a notification a few minutes ago that someone had responded to me saying this: “You paid $45k and 5 years in school learning how to manage a large classroom. You learned how to deal with an unreasonably wide range of abilities. You learned how to deal with the fact that most forms of reward and punishment are not permitted by school administrators. I know a pharmacist who quit their job to homeschool. I guarantee that she knows more about every academic subject than you do. She is academically qualified to teach at a college. She could teach you biochemistry.” ….And goes on to talk about how she’d die in a classroom of 30 but still would run circles around me in a classroom.
Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt, hoodie, hoodie and long sleeve tee
Yes, the Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt in addition I really love this commenter is from Florida. No, the commenter is not aware that I, too, am qualified to teach at the collegiate level. And most importantly: the commenter is clearly not aware of how little classroom management is actually taught in teacher prep programs lmfao Rant over!In my experience people like the pharmacist can teach absolutely everything about biochemistry, and not a god damned thing a k-12 student needs to know. I assure you I can teach science in 7th through 12th (and probably a couple college freshman classes) BUT no way in hell could I teach a 7th grader HOW to READ. I almost added to this that I am qualified to teach history at the collegiate level, but certainly not biochemistry! Who knew that being a pharmacist made that person qualified to teach the intricacies of fascism to 16 year olds?!
What a sad way to look at education. That’s kind of what 6-12 interventionists are for, especially when you loop ESL into the Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt in addition I really love this conversation. It’s just facts. If you are not a proficient reader by 3rd grade it is a 90% chance you will continue to be a struggling reader into high school. The later you start the longer intervention processes take ad there is a lot more unlearning and self-esteem and emotional baggage impacting learning. And a depressing side note I learned recently – prisons look at how many beds they’ll need by looking at reading proficiency for today’s third graders. And I’ve met WAY too many homeschool parents who seem to choose it to avoid their kids actually learning. Or avoid them receiving supportive services. When anyone tells me they homeschool, my opinion of their abilities drops substantially.

Where to buy this Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt
I would say this and you have to be able to repackage the Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt in addition I really love this content info so it’s digestible/engaging for the kids too. I try to challenge them but I also think I know at this point what they are capable of and not capable of. I’m not that impressed by pharmacist’s knowledge of biochemistry in general. The ones I knew in college took the bare minimum of biochemistry. They probably learned it alright at the time, but they probably have not been working on it since. Biochemists know their biochemistry. A pharmacist would probably be good at the heath careers class or the pharmacy tech class though. The even more outlandish claim is “she knows more about every academic subject than you do.” That is laughable.
I have a background in ecology, I’ve taken calculus, chemistry, statistics, anthropology, archaeology, geology blah blah blah. I cannot motivate my son to learn as well as his kinder teacher can. I well aware that teachers (good ones) are much better trained to teach my son than I am even though I do my best to help him with whatever subject has caught his attention at the Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt in addition I really love this moment. However, he was so bad at teaching, the nuns called him into the office for a parent-teacher conference and informed him he was not allowed to help with homework anymore when I was in 4th grade. When the sight of the math text book caused all 4 of us kids to burst into tears, the nuns called him in for a “discussion”. Oh, do we share the same dad?! I love the man dearly, and I acknowledge that he taught math to undergrads, but the trauma done to my Algebra 1 taking self was enough to never ask him for help again!
I say this is a non-teacher, teaching is not (just) about subject matter knowledge, it’s about pedagogy, learning styles, strategies, sequence etc. And you only get better as you experience more varieties of students thru the Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt in addition I really love this ages. My state sucks so I supplement my elementary daughter’s learning at home and I have read the books, watched the videos, bought (expensive) textbooks and taught myself to teach her the material. My mother is a well experienced educator and can come up with way better games, reinforcement practices and engaging methods in about 10 minutes than what I can after 3 days of preparation. It’s just not comparable for the foundational elementary years. As a Florida teacher, my favorite response to these people is to direct them to the Kelly Services website, tell them to apply to be a sub (since they know so much, they should have no problem getting hired), and invite them to teach my class for 2 weeks while I take a leave of absence. No takers yet!
There is a difference between knowing a subject and knowing HOW to teach said subject. This why college professors are so many college professors suck at teaching. Homeschool parents tutor rather than teach. Very different skillset. Even parents whose kids go to school often end up filling in gaps (for example, cvc blending, math facts, etc.) when curriculum dictates that these things not be covered due to some fad. Only the Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt in addition I really love this involved ones of course. I have a master’s degree in education, and I know that I’m not qualified to teach a single thing outside of my content area, besides maybe history. Dunning-Kruger strikes again Wth does being qualified to teach college have to do with teaching public schools? There is college, and there is middle school, and high school for a reason. Completely different things are taught. And I say this as someone that has taught both.
It’s funny, I was homeschooled and I do homeschool curricula with my son (To keep his minority language skills native-level). Yet, I have never had a good interaction of a homeschooling sub. They’re just too combative. I’m not even anti-homeschool, but they just get so pissed at the Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt in addition I really love this existence of teachers. And it’s not new. When I was a kid, I really thought I was smarter than other kids because my mom bought me books that were grades ahead. She did the same thing for my sister, who ended up going to a public school from 6th grade and she couldn’t even do division. When I eventually went to public school, I got slapped in the damn face by the workload. Turns out casually working through a single book with no supplementary material outside of an answer key is not that academically rigorous.
I’ve tried going into those spaces and encouraging parents not to see things in “homeschooler vs the Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt in addition I really love this world” terms, but they refuse. It’s not about educating their kids, it’s about rebellion. Yeah I noticed that about a lot of homeschooling discourse. It just seems like a lot of parents who home school have a really gigantic chip on their shoulder about how there are way is superior. It’s interesting to me r/teachers is very willing to discuss the limits and shortcomings of our educational system whereas a lot of parent led homeschooling communities become these echo chambers where you can only be positive about homeschooling. I am aware there are communities for children who are recovering from their negative homeschool experiences. You don’t really see a lot of people who are actively homeschooling. Wanting to acknowledge the way that this learning style has the potential to hurt children I love bringing up the formative/summative assessment and data analysis aspect of this job when people say things like this.
I love the Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt in addition I really love this data for my own purposes. I hate what it becomes when I have to meet a quota or threshold for admin’s sake. Are these the same people who started out by posting all those memes about how hard it was and how much they appreciate teachers? The ones who posted that meme from some idiot claiming to be a teacher that said don’t worry if your kids don’t learn anything during the pandemic; I can catch them up next year? That’s the general thought though. Welders believe they can teach. Stay at home moms think they can teach. They think teachers just talk. They can talk, it must be easy! They’re right in some ways. A lot of our education and experience went to understanding stuff that’s not necessary in home schooling. But not the majority of it.
The issue is the Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt in addition I really love this same as where MANY people believe they could land an airplane if they had to. MANY people believe they could fight off a large predator if they had to. Many people who know nothing about a subject, believe they have a solid understanding of it. Honestly tho, teaching 1-4 neurotypical kids, with a (presumably) stable home situation and (obviously) engaged parents is not an unreasonable task for any smart educated person. Teaching 15-30 kids with a wide range of abilities, backgrounds and motivations on a fixed schedule to outside standards is really hard. Teaching your own kids doesn’t make you a Teacher, even if you do a great job. It certainly doesn’t give you any more insight to how public education works than any other parent
I guess that was what was so infuriating about their comment. Sure, a homeschool parent doesn’t need classroom management skills, but the Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt in addition I really love this whole post was riddled with assumptions about me and other teachers. Not to mention that you’d think the added hurdle of learning to manage a classroom of 30 and teach them all something would make someone respect you more. I don’t even bother posting or reading over there. The sub for the homeschooled kids is even sadder. (it keeps getting recommended for me) So knowing something and knowing how to explain it to someone who has little to know prior knowledge about that thing are two VASTLY different skills. The fact that most homeschoolers truly believe that their children are just as socialized as traditional school children is laughable. Which just proves that they are not as good of teachers as they think they are.
If a public school teacher had a class size equal to the Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt in addition I really love this number of children in a typical family, enjoyed 50% or 100% parental support, and did not have to deal with the administration’s knee-jerk opposition to every sound idea, you can bet your last dime that the job would be easier. I work at a charter school where I am basically an instructional coach for homeschooling parents, with check-ins about every month or so and they send me work samples. I’d say most parents don’t realize is that there’s way more to what teachers learn than classroom management, and beyond the training we get and credential school I think a lot of it comes from experience. My first year of teaching I wasn’t that good of a teacher, but the longer I taugh one grade level the better I got at it. There’s no way to have one person be the best teacher to teach all of TK through 12. Despite that, there are some homeschooling families who are doing a great job, and some who are robbing their kids of an education. I’ve noticed it takes about 2 or 3 years for a parent to realize which one they are.
“Here’s a worksheet, later we will go to the Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt in addition I really love this park and smell flowers for science learning , we will also practice the Bible, then learn about essential oils. “ day done It sucks because there’s real, incredible experiential learning that is done by hardworking educators all the time. Biology can be done outside! Unfortunately, though, these people have no idea how to execute that (go figure) so it becomes “smelling flowers in the park.” Sad, and a disservice to education, imo. The parents of reddit are wildly oversensitive. I mentioned once that when my students say it’s the worst day ever, I remind them that if one worksheet is the worst they should appreciate that they have a nice life. Omg you would have thought I told them to lay down and die from the response I got. You come across as very insecure. I just read your post that you spent 45k and 5 years on your degree and get insulted if a homeschool parent thinks they can do the “job,” too. If they can, who cares? What are you so worried about? That, perhaps, a parent CAN teach their child? Is that really so scary? So many teachers here piss and moan about parents, about what they DON’T do, then when they take the initiative to do your job themselves, you’re insulted. I’m lost.
If you took the Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt in addition I really love this time to read the other comments I left on the r/homeschoolers thread, you’d see that the catalyst for the whole conversation was a comment I left that explicitly stated that I don’t doubt parents are capable of this work. Anyone and everyone is — with time, effort, experience, and hard work put in. Time, effort, experience, and hard work that amounts to … 5 years of higher education and $45k, at least in my experience. Scrolling through the homeschoolers echo chamber to find the latest rehashed version of ABCMouse or compiling curriculum is equivalent to maybe 10% of the day-to-day tasks of being a teacher. I’m not anti-homeschool parent or anti-parent at all. Yet, time and time again homeschool parents prove themselves to be anti-teacher. Relax. Get the chip off of your shoulder. Developmentally each child’s learning style must be taken into consideration. How does kiddo learn best? Kinesthetically, Auditoriy, Visually, other?A mixture of al?Some do best individually, some in group Everyone wants the kiddo to be best prepared for the next level of life and lifelong learning. As teachers it is interesting to hear about other opinions. I had some key phrases, feel free to use them Research has shown I was reading an interesting article the other day There was a study you might be right while I try to meet the needs of each child individually, time is very limited. All true. You’ve been educated and read tons of educational research to get that piece of paper! Right? May the odds be ever in your favor
Please educate me, I had a brain injury in 2000. So what we learned from Piaget worthless too? Has it now decided that Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theories out the Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt in addition I really love this window? I got my Master’s when I studied under Dr. Priscilla Norton. I believe she is now at George Mason. Have you heard of her or read any of her books? My objective in writing is to share what I’ve learned from my own actual teaching to help others. Sorry if you felt your time was wasted reading. You are quite combative in how you write to people – just because someone has pointed out that something you have reference has been debunked (multiple times, a quick Google of it would “educate” you) does not mean that they disagree with all pedagogical research – although it must be said that vast majority of research in education has been of poor quality, particularly in terms of sample size. It also does not make you better than someone because you studied under someone who wrote a book (like all professors do) or that you can name drop some concepts that you once read.
I did not feel that my Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt in addition I really love this time was wasted, or I would not have replied – VAK learning styles is still regularly touted despite it being nonsense and as such should be challenged so that people do not continue to propagate it. I was curious if you knew of Dr. Norton’s work? Everything old is not worthless even though it feels that way when I read statements like yours. No offense is meant. I really mean May your path in life be filled with joy. G’night Also, a pharmacist is *not* guaranteed to know more about every academic subject than you (or anyone). It means that they are probably very educated in mathematics, biology, chemistry, and pharmacology. But, not necessarily, say history. Or grammar. Or literature. Or any of a dozen other things that are needed between kindergarten and 12th grade. Edited to add: and, of course, simply knowing something does not mean that she is qualified to teach it to anyone, let alone in an age-appropriate or pedagogically appropriate way to any particular age/grade/level student.
I created an intense, strict AND kind. I was a real bad kid for a girl in the Victoria De Angelis Icon Shirt in addition I really love this 60’s. I was super sneaky. My class was best behaved, and I had a few BD kids in regular ed. Thankfully a small First Grade classroom. I developed a decent rep. Granted it was First Grade, but it can be easily upgraded. I’m thinking about writing a free book. Would it have any success? Just classroom management. Id hate to waste anyone’s time. Depression sucks Teaching is very easy. Classroom management is not. Be American teacher in crappy school district and teaching is a nightmare. Move to China and teach extremely well disciplined second language Chinese kids – easy. College students these days are terrible. So comparing them to school kids is also fair.
