I’ve known way too many introverts that are just as stupid as extroverts, you don’t notice that much because they don’t speak very much that’s all. Thirty years of teaching high school has given me time to reflect on this issue. I don’t completely understand it but here is my takeaway. Some of my students on the spectrum have been lower IQ. However, an inordinate amount of my most academically capable students have been geeks who have issues with social communication. If I haven’t seen anyone in a long time, seeing people is energizing. If I haven’t been alone in a long time, seeing people is exhausting. Introverts don’t mind spending a significant amount of time alone learning a particular skill, so they tend to be more “gifted” in a certain area. There are also studies that suggest that introverts think differently thane extroverts and use different parts of their brain more, but none of this means that extroverts are any less intelligent on average.

I agree, I was being a bit flippant. There are all kinds of intelligence, and one of my favourite things to do is to point out to people how smart they are – and it often comes as a surprise to them. It’s true. (I also don’t believe that IQ is that important and certainly not holistic, I just know mine because I was sent for testing in school).
