And I’ve heard the UPS I’m ok box shirt and I love this argument “Twitter should pay these creators, they’re why people go to Twitter.” If that’s the case, why aren’t The New York Times keeping all that traffic to themselves and just posting it on their own site? They’ve in effect said the current arrangement is equitable. They post content there which drives traffic both to Twitter and to the NYT from people like me. What the NYT has said is they are not willing to pay Twitter to drive eyeballs to Twitter’s ads. They pay by providing content. They are not going to pay on top of that. I’ve been reading all these posts here and on other networks about the “book bans” based on similar foundation, so I put it in the same light. And they’re using it to make money. I guarantee the NYT makes a lot more of their income from being on Twitter than they do any of their other expenses, and those all cost more than $8 a month. Under Twitter rules, the NYT is an “organization” so their check mark would cost them $12,000 per year. Then on top of that there is paying for all their individual content creators on Twitter. Perhaps still a rounding error for an organization of their size, but I would assume that for them it is a matter of principle. But it now has 0 coming in from sale of user data, and they’re trying to recoup some through asking those who profit from using Twitter, to pay the cost of a cup of coffee / month to have an “I’m Special!” button next to their name.

That’s the UPS I’m ok box shirt and I love this key phrase here. Musk talks about a lot of things… I haven’t actually heard any official releases that Twitter has stopped selling user data. That’s great they said that, however, they aren’t currently being asked to pay anything. The current gold checks are being grandfathered to accounts who were already verified. That’s not exactly true, gold checks are for organizations and will cost $1000 per month. However, what you’re speaking of: “Ten thousand of the most-followed organisations on Twitter will be exempt from the rules, the New York Times reports, citing an internal Twitter document.” So some orgs will not have to pay. New York Times said they wouldn’t pay for their check mark regardless, Elon shit a brick, called their feed diarrhea, then took away their grandfathered gold check mark. Many other orgs have said they will also not pay, but at this time currently still have their check mark (CNN, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post). Sooner or later Twitter is going to get a rival social network so that news media, F500 cpmpanies, celebrities and politicians can announce their offical statments. 90 percent of the folks who just scan the headlines won’t even care, but they do know Musk was anti-free speech and critical of Democrats for months and months once he got his dirty, South African hands upon it.
