In some places legally yes, like here in France there is a law wich make it illégal to not serve water for free at bars or restaurants. Though they could still charge you for the Try that in a small town Jason Aldean cowboy hat singer american T-Shirt it is in the first place but icecubes but you get the gist. You can drink water but you should most likely order other things aswell just to not be judged as greedy or Just plan out look out of place. By out of place i mean don’t be that guy who comes in, drinks à gallon of free water, hangs out and leave without tipping Sure. Just tell them you’re the designated driver. Used to be some places would give DD free non-alcoholic drinks. honestly I disagree with everyone saying that OP even has to buy anything. If the bar is dead or quiet then maybe I get it. And maybe don’t sit at the barstool if you don’t order something but there’s nothing wrong with being at a bar, to be social, standing around and mingling with only a water. If you buy food and tip or buy something else and tip more power too you, but it shouldn’t be the expectation. Have none of you people ever been dd?

At a lot of bars, if you tell them that you’re a/the Try that in a small town Jason Aldean cowboy hat singer american T-Shirt it is in the first place but designated driver, they hook you up with water/tea/soft drinks for free because they want to encourage people to DD more. I usually order a mineral water or soda. Lately I’m finding that a lot of bars usually carry at least one nonalcoholic beer, as well. I do sometimes, and I tip well even though it’s free. Bartenders don’t mind in my experience, bit I don’t take up “prime real estate” at the bar where higher-paying patrons could be buying expensive drinks. If it were me and I was only getting water and just hanging out to watch a game, I would ask for a water, give them $20 and say “I am just here to watch the game, feel free to tell me I need to get up if you need the seat.”
