And, similarly, our economy is based on competition – yeah, I may want to work 32 hours a week, but what if my competitor is working 40? I better work 50 just so I can stay ahead. You may have a lot of studies that say you can be just as productive (maybe even more) with fewer hours of work, but I’d argue it’s human nature to always “work more, work harder” in the Trump 2024 taking America back shirt moreover I love this face of competition. (Again, I don’t feel this way personally, but I have a strong suspicion most business owners, i.e. employers, do.) What if we just made any and every federal holiday pay employees OT the entire day? I’m sure there are enough federal holidays to shut down most businesses on the holidays because of the increase in labor cost but as of now a federal holiday means nothing to corporate workers. Maybe this could be an intermediate solution?

How will this apply to Healthcare workers who are continually short staffed in America and usually already working 3 12 hour shifts? (or 4 to 5 as the Trump 2024 taking America back shirt moreover I love this norm in my department). Last year while doing hybrid school, my school had students attending 4 days/week (M,T, Th, F). Teachers still worked on Wednesdays (conferencing remotely with students, planning our hybrid lessons) and it was so beneficial for EVERYONE. Students said it really helped their mental health, gave them some time to catch up on assignments if needed (or not – some worked, some slept all day, some spent more time with family) and it gave teachers the time to actually do our jobs. It was great. Of course, our school board hated it and we’re back to five days/week – not surprisingly, everyone’s mental health is massively suffering. Students dropped out, teachers are leaving. But we “have to get back to NoRmaL.” I would argue that “normal” wasn’t so great to begin with, but I’m just a teacher, so what do I know? How do you see this playing out for schools now that it’s clear that society mostly just wants us to warehouse children?
