There’s on hypothesis that women accused of witchcraft were often old, and they would have been brutally beaten and tortured before they “confessed” So their faces would have been discolured, their teeth and fingers broken, etc. So on their way to bonfire, they would have been hobbling, twisted ugly wretches. There is a great podcast about witches, called “witch”, done by BBC. King James VI was madly obsessed with hunting witches and wrote a book on what he thought they got up to and how to detect them: In medieval times witches were women who were typically tortured. This is how they get green skin and everything else. Being locked in the gym will do that and burn everything else that happened to him. By the time they were done they just looked like they were destroyed.
