Cellphones blast high frequencies when hunting for cell service. I always thought this when I was growing up. We’re taking off and I see someone using their phone. If there was no chance they messed up anything, there would be no need to demand they get switched to airplane mode. The truth is somewhere in between. It can mess with flight instruments, albeit under very specific circumstances. I think it is a legacy of early cell phones. There was either a real risk, or the technology was moving so fast they couldn’t be sure. Idk man, flight instruments can be very finicky. I could definitely see a mass amount of cell phones increasing power and searching for reception interfering with certain flight instruments. Now that’s not inherently a problem if the pilot notices, and they should be able to discern that any number of instruments aren’t working properly. The perfect storm of issues occurs when a pilot is complacent and there is a condition that could get them in trouble. We can get a plane on the ground with no coms, no gyro, and no altimeter. It’s not nearly as complicated as people think. That’s not what I’m saying. It’s not that the cant. It’s that an instrument that isn’t working is very dangerous if you don’t know it’s not working properly.
