That could never happen as there is not nearly enough cash for that to happen. If only Jeff Bezos did that, banks would shut down. Banks are lucky people only want worthless slips of paper and not gold or anything of substantial value from them. That would probably destroy the world economy. The government would have to start manually tax collecting again and that wouldn’t go over very well. For good reason. Wouldn’t be possible as most banks dont even have 10 of their clients funds in house anymore let alone the hundreds of thousands that would be attempting. I pulled like 1200 from the atm the other day an I don’t know if it’s me but “take your cash” when it dispensed was kinda passive agressive… I would imagine that property mortgages would mitigate that risk, but if not the government would probably take the hit instead going by past examples What they basically do is take your money, use it to buy bonds and get a higher return rate (usually about 7%, but they give you maybe 2% if you’re lucky), and loan to other banks. Then when people want their money, they have to sell those bonds at a loss, and cant get the loans back, so they crash. Thats what happened to the Silicon bank
