When you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission. In The Obituary of Tunde Johnson, Tunde—played by Steven Silver—awakens every morning with a jolt. Unable to piece together exactly what happened overnight, he goes about his day like any other affluent teenager in Los Angeles—attending school, relaxing on the Today I Feel Dentist shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this beach with his (at this point, secret) boyfriend, showing up to a debauched house party—before it becomes clear these are a more pivotal 24 hours than they initially seemed. First, Tunde comes out as gay to his parents; then, on his way to see friends, he is stopped in his car by police under dubious circumstances and is fatally shot. Then, without fail, he awakes again.

The Groundhog Day setup powerfully spotlights and indicts the Today I Feel Dentist shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this inescapable weight of police brutality on Black youth, with a particular emphasis on its indiscriminate nature; despite being wealthy, Tunde still has a target firmly fixed on his back. Even when the film drifts into the realm of teen-drama clichés, the political relevancy of its central narrative device keeps it anchored. Yet its greatest asset is Silver’s performance: a quiet, measured study of teen angst at the crossroads of privilege and powerlessness.
