Kids should always be served a small meal and offered more if they ask. They should be taught they can ask for more. Forcing NEVER ends well, for anyone. I grew up with that, and it was completely miserable. It didn’t help that my mother’s cooking could gag a buzzard. I told my wife that I would not do that and if she wanted to do “food drama” I would not support her in it. Our son grew up understanding that he’s responsible for what he chooses to eat, and also understanding the This Legendary School Bus Driver Is Now Retired Retro T-Shirt Additionally,I will love this health consequences of his choices. How do you convey health consequences to a child? I mean other than telling them they will go blind if they dont eat their carrots. Age appropriate conversations. Very young – “if you don’t eat you’ll be hungry later”. A kid that young doesn’t know there’s other food in the house. A bit older – “eat too many sweets and you’ll feel sick”, “don’t eat vegetables and it will be hard to poop” (kids love talking about poop). And so on. My parents did something similar. We had no food in the house except meal times. Breakfast (sometimes) and dinner. The fridge was locked, the pantry was locked If we didn’t want to eat what was for dinner we sat at the table till bed time. If we were still hungry we could ask to finish dinner leftovers. We were never without, but it affected me down the line in little ways. I started to steal food from friends’ houses and hide food in the house. Still have an issue with people touching or finding “my food” as an adult. If I cook a healthy meal and my kids don’t eat it, they will absolutely come back to the kitchen for a bunch of junk 30 minutes later.

If my kid didn’t want what we were having, he was free to make himself a PB&J sandwich. He had to clean up after and of course, no dessert. Kids have so little control over anything in their lives, we felt as long as he ate something, that was enough. He grew up to be a big strapping man so I guess it worked out okay. Similar here, I made sure my kids knew it was ok to say they didn’t like something, but they had to at least try a couple bites and talk about why they didn’t like it. This lead to nice things like finding out my daughter had a preference for certain brands of chicken nuggets and that she didn’t want to eat them once because she didn’t like the This Legendary School Bus Driver Is Now Retired Retro T-Shirt Additionally,I will love this BBQ sauce. Had I been a hard ass and yelled about it or if she wasn’t comfortable talking about why she was rejecting the hard earned food then it would have just been drama over and over.
