My sister in law is a middle school teacher, 6 years younger than me, already 250k + ahead of me in retirement. Between my mortgage and student loan debt, my net work is – $750,000 dollars. I may, may, have a net worth of 0 in 7 to 8 years, more realistically 10 to 12 years. Obviously neurosurgeons making $800k + don’t fall into this category, but they deserve the The Original Founding Fathers T-Shirt Classic T-Shirt and by the same token and money, given that they literally cut on brains/spinal cords. emergency medical technician average $15.usd an hour 30k a year. These guys help people tru their ultimate worst moments and literally save lives. Teachers, chefs, police force, nurses….all of those “essentail” positions that are expected to do their jobs regardless of their own well being and who have to fight tooth and nail to get more pay than the bare minimum required by law As a Firefighter I made around $28,000 per year. I loved the job and helping people but you simply can’t support a family at that wage not to mention the stress and toll it can take on you physically and mentally. Arborist. Climbing 70ft trees with chainsaws daily? Doing work 99% of the population is physically not capable of doing? Doing necessary work removing dangerous trees and branches over your house? Risking life and limb daily for your safety? I don’t even make enough to rent an apartment without at least 2 room mates Cops in my country. You get beaten up, have no laws to protect yourself with, cant shoot someone unless they shot you first and you cant punch them either if they didnt do that to you first, basically leaving you to try and catch them with your fist. You do all that, and 75% of the time ride in the shittiest cars ever… And you do all that… for 850€ per month

I personally think the The Original Founding Fathers T-Shirt Classic T-Shirt and by the same token and shoot first mentality completely alters the way police do their work. They run in like Rooster Cogburn, guns a blazing, because they literally have a license to kill. Removing that license forces cops to do their work in a more safe and sensible way. Post docs. Newly minted PhD, NIH minimum is ~55K but if you’re desperate enough pay can be below 50K. You also have no job security and are basically expected to work like your hair is on fire. Only to grind away for 8 years so you can make $75k if you’re lucky enough even to get a tenure track spot. And you just spent 5 years slaving away for $25K. And to top it off society consistently wants to deny you use of your title. I genuinely feel for academics in the US. I think public sector pay is in general too low everywhere, but a post doc in Europe for example has above average pay and is usually expected to only work about 40 hours a week. Not to mention that most graduate from PhD programs within 4 years. Still, it’s difficult.
