A poster will mention either dealing with or witnessing aggression in students and the results that can happen (bruises, scratches, etc.) and the responses range from things like file a police report, nobody should ever be dealing with violent students, leave your job, and generally a sense that people have a zero tolerance policy for aggression in classrooms. Mind you not all of these posts are referring specifically to sped classes, but multiple were or commented about that not mattering to them.
I will say this: in a typical GE classroom setting at a site that is not equipped to deal with aggression, people are right that staff for those schools should not expect to deal with aggression. And this probably is where most people here are placed! At those sites, yes, you will be dealing with aggressive behaviors. When I became a para for a severe sped program, I was fully aware that aggression would be part of their behaviors and I could reasonably expect to be managing those behaviors. If someone isn’t willing to deal that, then people will understand and you don’t need to work at a site that deals with those behaviors. But if you do work on sites that are equipped to deal with behaviors: they will happen. I hope that educators are at least exposed to observations of these types of severe programs to see that this isn’t something you can make go away by filing police reports until the student is removed from school, they may be in an appropriate placement and it isn’t something you’re willing to deal with, which is okay. But understand that the aggression is a result of some of their disability, creating frustration from a lack of communication skills or lack of quality modeling that can absolutely improve if handled appropriately.I think most will go the police report route for their own protection. And it may be the only way to get the ball rolling to get students in these placements you speak of.
School districts much like violent students need effective incentives and disincentives to behave properly. She then filed charges for criminal assault. The whole thing was a heartbreaking mess where experts had to be called to testify about his IQ. Stories like these are proof that the system doesn’t have the best interest of these kids or the people around them in mind.

Gen ed teachers are often blamed by sped teachers for not being able to handle severe behavior problems.

In my jurisdiction, we shifted to a pretty full-inclusion model but didn’t fund that model. So we are always borrowing supports from one kid to give to another. Teachers have been fighting for full inclusion with proper support in my area for as long as I can remember. I honestly don’t think we’re giving very many kids what they need despite the “differentiation” PD’s, etc. We need some common sense solutions. The aim should be to include, but we should always be realistic with where students are at that moment in time and how we can best help them to reach their potential in that particular school year.

As a gen ed teacher, I definitely am not equipped to handle violent outbursts, the best I can do is remove the other students and try to protect them.

Congress could, but wont because We The People, keep electing reps and senators that yell at each other and say the other side is bad/naughty/stupid/evil.
