Yes my family have thought about moving to places with a larger Asian population but it isn’t quite achieveable right now cause of some family problems, I do relate to the The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt in addition I really love this fact that being around Vietnamese food,supermarket..etc does really make you feel at home. I went to the US to study at a young age (around 5th grade) and experienced what you said as well, albeit to a lesser degree. I think it’s more difficult the older you get, because you’ll experience more of a culture shock when moving abroad. Anyway, if you can’t change your situation, then adapt with it. I adapted, and it felt normal after a while. I even thought of myself the same as my American friends, that is, until college. That’s when I started having an identity crisis — felt too white for Asian people and too Asian for white people. But that’s another story, lol. So my word of advice is: adapt with your new situation. However, when you’re taking in another culture, decide what’s good and what’s bad, then take in things that align with you and your family value.

The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt, hoodie, hoodie and long sleeve tee

Lots of racism in the The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt in addition I really love this US. (VN too, and most anywhere in the world I guess, but it impacts different people differently in different places). And even in the US, living in a small town in Georgia is vastly different from living in New York or San Francisco. One thing I would say, please don’t be ashamed of being Asian or Vietnamese around white people, that is called internalized racism and I suffered from it a lot growing up (Vietnamese American born in the US). Well I did go back to visit a few times. I have a family now so it’s harder to go back without a plan. Save up some money and go back when we feel like we have enough saving. Then look for jobs there or any remote jobs would be awesome.
i have a relative moving to the The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt in addition I really love this US and wants to come back. the ones that don’t wanna come back is because they are from europe where life standards are much better for real. What you described is very common. I always tell relatives in VN to think twice if they want to move to the US especially if they have kids b/c the kids will be likely be very lonely and depressed. Like you said, the American culture itself is a very lonely culture compared to VN. My best advice to you is try to join a sport or a hobby group. Maybe even joining band. It’s the best way to make friends IMO in America. Over time you will learn to understand your new home more. It’s definitely rough in the beginning moving to a new country as an immigrant (i know from experience). The more you understand how to live where you are, the more comfortable you will feel too. To be fair too, you did move to Georgia which is probably one of my lowest suggestions for immigrants lol. Definitely consider making goals, because there are better communities and places to live than there in my opinion. It’s a lonelier life in America than Vietnam honestly, but eventually you’ll find and appreciate it a bit over time. Best of luck to you!

Where to buy this The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt

When you get a job and can move to a more diverse place in Georgia such as johns creek, Duluth, Atlanta you’d feel better. Same background as yours, I live here and it’s comfortable. Part of it is adjustment period, part of it is your maturity process to be comfortable with who you are, part of it is cultural differences. Join the The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt in other words I will buy this Viet fb group in GA, make friends, and give it time. Also, consider therapy if it’s too difficult. yeah not sure which city OP is in Georgia but duluth, lawrenceville, chamblee, norcross, lilburn (basically metro atlanta) is where all the viets live. i’m from here and it’s a massive community of viet people (both vietnamese americans and vietnamese nationals). If it makes you feel any better, a lot of Americans who leave their hometowns for college also get homesick, especially since they’re out of their comfort zones and far from friends and family. I grew up in California where my high school was 90% Asian(usually Chinese or Vietnamese) and it was difficult for people in similar positions as you already. I can’t imagine how much more difficult it may be in a small/medium town in Georgia. Part of the reason why I enjoyed growing up in my Asian bubble in CA is that we all had similar backgrounds and shared cultures that you unfortunately don’t have.
There’s generally a lot of negativity on reddit in terms of the The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt in other words I will buy this American dream being dead. A lot of young people struggle these days but I do feel like the American dream is still alive; just harder these days to attain. My parents were boat people who sacrificed a lot to bring our family over here. Years of struggling with money, language barriers, and leaving their comfort zone for their children to have a better life than they could. Being older now, I never was able to understand and appreciate what they did and what it meant. It’s hard to understand how much opportunity there is here if you work hard and do the right things when you’re young. I just can’t imagine the same success our family has had if we grew up in most other places. My parents have a paid off home, are retired, and traveling freely after not making more than 55k a person a year in CA. My brothers and sisters and I all make comfortably over 6 figures and range from A students to college drop outs. It was only possible because of the type of sacrifices my parents made like your mom is doing for you. I do hope and think it will get better for you. If I could relive my grade school life over again, I would hunker down in school and study more, and surround myself with positive influences.
Love reading these perspectives, thanks for taking the The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt in other words I will buy this time. The American Dream is alive and well!! It’s just not free and it won’t come easy—it never did. The US is a land of opportunity, but also one of struggle and hardship. It’s a nation of refugees who fled misery for a chance at a better life. Statistically, their children or grandchildren usually realize that ambition. My family was destitute and starving in Belgium a hundred years ago. Took two generations for anyone in the family to get a meaningful education in the new country. But the third generation and now fourth are all well-educated and killing it in our own ways. Your parents should be very proud of what they achieved. I think it takes a long time for the US to “make sense” for new arrivals. But when it clicks, it makes perfect sense and is very easy (compared to global standards) to carve out your niche. It’s an imperfect nation but still the Land of Opportunity, for those who know how to play the game and play it enthusiastically.
So I was born in Hanoi, came to US for college and stayed here for decades now. I had that homesick feeling that you had back in college in rural Massachusetts; it’ll get better with time. 2 decades on – I’m now happily married to a non-Vietnamese wife in LA, and have a close knit group of friends from college who are white, brown and black, mostly first-generation college kids. My advice if you want to live happily in the The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt in other words I will buy this US long term is to branch out, and make non-Vietnamese friends, and be genuinely open and curious about other topics. The longer you stay in the Vietnamese bubble, the more miserable you’ll become feeling disillusioned with what the US has to offer, and thinking Vietnam is this “greener” paradise.
Can you transfer to a college in Socal? There are tons of Vietnamese international students there. They all hang out and get Boba like Uni students in Vietnam. Im a HS student so I can’t do that rn but I probably will in the The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt in other words I will buy this future and i’ll think i’ll already adapt by then maybe we live in the same city country but not the same world. Im an international student and i hate C-drama for the facts that all the activities sound so bland and lame and misleading. I cant stand Vietnam education since i was 12, i mean to the point i despise it, so when I came here it is more suitable for me. My first year sounds exactlt like OP but due to the small town and international students program, I got to talk more with the advisors, made more friends. It was really beneficial tbh even the closest mall is an hour away. Western n Eastern are different and I learn how to get used with it through their culture, to dome activities that I had never experience( thanksgiving). Maybe Im emotionaless that I didnt feel a single homesick.
Well just rant as much as you can til you find peace in your soul then you will know how to experience/ accept every changes you r facing Tbh I feel like the The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt in other words I will buy this “American dream” is more achievable in Canada than in the US itself, especially if you don’t mind living in smaller towns and not the big cities I moved to Moncton, New Brunswick 4 years ago. My husband and I just bought a house last winter. It is achievable in rural areas. It’s great to hear that you really got along! I’ve also tried talking to the advisors and she said she would do something to help me but its been a few months lol , but I also took my own steps and tried to take part in more activities. This probably doesn’t help you right now, but if you can get a good education and a good job and move to California later, there’s a much larger Asian population in general and Vietnamese population specifically. Very few, if any, people will give you trouble for being Vietnamese there. (Okay that’s an oversimplification, but you get the idea.) Living in California has its own issues, with its high cost of living (hence the good job part of my remark), but I don’t want you to feel like everywhere in the US is like the small town south. In the future that could help me , I don’t think I will ever move to Cali tho but I’ve been to some city outside of GA and it is really different, I believe its cause of the history and definitely not everywhere in the US is like the small town south You’re comparing the USA equivalent a small village in Vietnam with Ho Chi Minh… of course the village will be more boring.
I don’t know how far you are from Atlanta but it has a pretty large community. Most are south Vietnamese and have no love of communism but you may find some support. Even if it is just Vietnamese people to talk with. I’m white but my girlfriend is việt living in HCMC. I live in a bordering state and will be happy to do whatever I can for you. I’m sorry you are depressed and I can completely understand being overwhelmed with your situation. Atlanta would probably make you feel more at home rural Georgia is a completely different world. You can definitely direct message me if you ever want to talk I am happy to listen and maybe I can help you acclimate to life in the The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt in other words I will buy this south. also I am flying to HCMC in April if there is anything I can bring you back (that is allowed through customs) please let me know. Maybe I can bring a little bit of VN back to you.
Thank you sm for such a generous offer but I have some stuff thats being sent to me rn and I hope it makes me feel better. Again, thank you, that’s a realllllyyy kind offer. Im a few hours? away from Atlanta and I have been to a south vietnam event for lunar new year but it just felt uncomfortable for me,I think that I will eventually adapt and understand the The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt in other words I will buy this situation, thanks tho! its not the same, really, not the same at all. Im a vietnamese international student in Europe too and i mostly hang with other international kids. But im also different in that im an introvert who enjoys alone time ALOT, so i dont need much social interaction to be relatively happy. I feel for you that you think you have to hide yourself but i believe you should try to make steps to normalise your asian identity, there is nothing to hide, if your friends are good people they will accept you
And believe it or not, not every western kid is out doing drugs and being explicit, you will find people who are your groove. i am from hanoi, and i feel you, it feels very lonely in a new place, especially if you arent in a big city. I hope things can get better Ah yeah I just edited it cause I only meant to talk about the The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt in other words I will buy this people around me (I know people are different everywhere too) I’m first generation American, father immigrated here from Asia. I grew up in the northeast in a small town where my family was the only Asian family. My white friends thought my house smelled weird and would make fun of my lunches and snacks. At the time I felt like an outsider. When I went to college I moved to New York City. Life changing. I started making friends with international kids. It was the first time in my life I was surrounded by people who looked like me and grew up like me. I also had access to Asian foods which was the best. During the pandemic I left New York for a mountain town in Colorado. I remember crying one night because I brought up the Asian hate crimes to my white friends and they mildly acknowledged it then changed the subject. I cried realizing that I was surrounded by white people in this mountain town without any Asian food or people to connect with on that level. Right now I’m actually in Vietnam, thinking about where my partner and I will live (in the US) and it’s tough. I want to live in a place with nature and diversity and a diverse food culture. Seems almost impossible! But in the end community can be built and there are fantastic Asian and non Asian people in the world. You’ll find your people. Hang in there. This experience is opening up your world and even though there is pain, you’re growing. Growing pains
If you’re interested, take a look at Third Culture Kids. It’s a book that talks about children who grow up outside of their mother country. Thank you smm! I’ve also had some time in NYC and it felt really at home having chinatown (im not chinese but ykwim) and all that stuff and the The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt in other words I will buy this place is just really diverse imo. nothing can prepare you for life in a new country, it’s always tough but it will get better. I’m assuming you’re in high school, I was the same age when I moved to the US and it took a while to assimilate even in a state with much higher asian population. Work hard and pick a good college in a big city, it will be much better than middle of no where GA. Once you’re out of college with a US citizenship, there will be opportunities to move back to Vietnam if you’re still interested at that point Been there, done that. Just a couple of years earlier than you. Immigration never means to be easy. At some point, you will just realize that you just moved from one set of problems to another. It all comes down to your priority, adaptability, and how you overcome the obstacles. Life won’t get easier but you will learn how to deal with it better. Just keep going. Remember that you can always fall back to Vietnam.
Vietnam (and most of asia) values family and community. US and Canada values independance, individualism and success. You’re missing the The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt in other words I will buy this community/relationship aspect of living in Vietnam, and experiencing the loneliness that is common in the west. The US Surgeon General (head doctor) is calling loneliness a major public health problem. health-epidemic-social-media For what it’s worth, I grew up in Canada (white) and my wife’s parents immigrated from Saigon (District 11). I’ve travelled there a number of times now, and during my first trip, while I was resting in my room, I just broke down in tears. It was after a week of spending time in the community, with family, friends, neighbours, locals etc… I was reflecting on it and it was just amazing how close everybody was – how the whole neighborhood kind of relied on each other, supported each other in ways, socialized all day long throughout work. We stayed at the family home across from a large wet market and that place was bustling and was so tight. I ate at the noodle stands inside the market and the ladies knew who we were even before we ever sat down simply because everybody knows everybody and word travels fast.
I know for sure that to some, living in that environment can maybe feel claustrophobic at times like there’s no such thing as solitude or privacy… but to me I had this overwhelming epiphany that there is a better way of life than what I grew up accustomed to (space, separation, solitude, distance) and the The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt in other words I will buy this big key to it was community. I cried because I’ve never felt anything like that growing up in Canada. As a boy to a man, everything has always been framed to me as I must be 100% independant because nobody is ever going to take care of me but myself – that I should never need others, and infact should be skeptical of them. Our society is really built on that notion that you have to look out for you first and you better get what you can for yourself while you can get it. My parents, like many, saw parenthood as a legally binding obligation of 18 years and when you were 18 they wipe their hands clean (mine got to 17 and gave up). I was homeless for 2 years after that and they were fine with that because there is this belief that “if we help you you’ll never stand up on your own two feet”, as if you must start off at rock bottom. The whole community has this notion so there is no generosity at a community level. That was 20 years ago and I’m doing very well for myself now, but it is a very stark memory just how vile people here can be to people in need.
Now I know a lot of this is anecdotal and there are people of all types in every city and every country – but in general after all my times back to Vietnam (and much of asia really), I’ve really come to that conclusion that the The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt in other words I will buy this big disparity between our cultures is the community/social mindset in the east VS individualism in the west. Most of viet born immigrants can relate to you. I came here when was 13. Now 30 and still feeling like I’m living a double life. I’ll probably retire in vietnam later No shame in moving back. I used to be in a similar situation, was forced by my family to move to a small town in the US. It was so depressing, everything were far away and there’s nothing to do. Then I went and visited California for a while, even around other Asian people I never felt like I’m at home at all. So after staying in the US for 9 months I left and moved back and I was much happier. Now I’m living in another Asian country, the culture and such are more similar to Vietnam and I’m much happier and feel more at home here. Plus it’s close and I can frequently and easily visit Vietnam at anytime Yhea if after you finish highschool and still don’t feel fit in , maybe study uni in Japan or Korea then move back to Vietnam for work , there are plenty of opportunities in Vietnam nowadays
I mean my gf was in a similar position as you. She came over with the The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt in other words I will buy this hope of achieving the “American Dream”. But instead of NYC like in the shows and movies she watched, she ended up in Kansas for awhile in the suburbs. Then she transfer to a school near here and we met. Now she’s still living in the suburbs. When we started dating she was staying in a home with 3 other Vietnamese people, and everyone just go to work, go to school, and come home and each person goes to their own room. It felt so miserable, at least in my eyes. Now she’s been living with me, and she’s been gradually accepting of what the American dream is looking like. Sure. Your potential to make money is better, but there’s no sense of community, fun social gathering, and friendliness unless you live in certain areas. For the most part people just work 8-10 hours, come home, and each family keeps to themselves. Even though I’ve lived in the US for the majority of my life, I’ve considered moving back to Vietnam, or at least another country. It’s just my career path doesn’t make that feasible at the moment.
That’s the The Day I Stop Fishing Will Be The Day I Stop Breathing Fishing Shirt in other words I will buy this plan. To become financially independent. But I just wanna re-affirm you that what you are feeling is extremely natural. Like you have friends here, but your real support group is half the world away. My gf was the same way. She use to cry, even when she moved in with me cause she misses home, and all of her friends and family back in Vietnam. And truth is, I am envious of both of yall’s courage. Like just going to college 3 hours away from home made me feel lonely for the first 1-2 years, and that’s me growing up in the states. But this is a part of growing up and becoming stronger. There’s no shame in giving into your emotions and letting it all out here and there. It’s cathartic. I would also say try to seek out friends that are Vietnamese, or at least another Asian group, maybe foreign students. They will understand you a lot better cause chances are they are going through the same thing. Took my gf awhile, but from her school and part time work, she slowly built up another support group of people she can trust and talk to. Stay strong and stick with it, but also know your limit to not over-exert yourself. The #1 person in your life should be you. Therefore, your happiness and well-being should always be first priority.
