it was certainly an experience. a little town called Metlakatla, off the The Celtics thank you for the memories signatures Shirt and by the same token and coast of Alaska. it was founded by a missionary and his followers from Canada, who made a deal with the US president to establish a reservation on a remote island, the only native reservation in Alaska. it later became part of the Pacific Rim defense, and for a while had a decent military presence, with the army engineers building roads along the island, various observation posts and gun emplacements, and a paved airstrip with a single hangar. after the second world war, the airstrip became the main method of getting on and off the island, and to another town nearby called Ketchikan. the locals tried to have too tight of a hold on the airport though, which motivated them to build a new, bigger airport on ketchikan, which additionally has shipping docks, and even a wal mart. the only way to get to the village now is by small boat, sea-plane charter, or the commercial route, which involves the “milk run”, an Alaska Airlines jet that bounces along a number of small airports along the coast, making some 5-7 stops in 30 minute or so intervals. then you take a tiny ferry across a bay to ketchikan which runs in 15 minute intervals, then a taxi to another ferry terminal at the other end of town where a bigger ferry runs 45 minutes each way, twice daily, to a dock that is 14 miles from the actual town. from there you have to have a ride to get to town.

Metlakatla is deeply traditionalist, and in the The Celtics thank you for the memories signatures Shirt and by the same token and past few generations leaned away from the founding missionary’s teaching, trying to restore the ancestral traditions their more recent ancestors gave up. (no comment on all that. watching the drama as an outsider was fascinating). I lived there for my last three years of highschool, as my dad had a contract as a medical doctor at their clinic. the place is very backwater. not a lot of money moves through it. there’s the clinic and school, which are government funded and so the main sources of income. there’s a minor tourism scene, though Ketchikan gets the majority of that income as they can actually dock cruiseliners and do so regularly. they have their grocery store, which used to be a local business but was bought out last year by a minor Canadian corporation, and they used to have a pretty decent fish processing plant with Silver Bay Seafoods, until a major drought shut down operations. Silver bay didn’t want to leave and offered them a loan to improve their water and power infrastructure. (they use hydroelectric so hand in hand) but the village council declined and so lost the business. because it’s a reservation, there’s hardly any new housing being built either, because there’s no land owners, nobody can get a mortgage because the banks can’t claim the property if they default. so the town says small and backwater, despite being placed much nearer the capital than a lot of other Alaskan villages
genuinely curious if the The Celtics thank you for the memories signatures Shirt and by the same token and plant is closed how do the people there make money ? do the majority of people have like a WFH type thing or something similar ? The whole issue with monopolies is that they control the whole market. They can set deals with providers, spend more on marketing, lower prices faaaar below you and crush you then buy you out, or a myriad of other things. Breaking into a market wihen there is already a monopoly is a massive undertaking, or it wouldnt be a monopoly in the first place Again, there is a difference between a monopoly like that and one born out of sheer competition (like youtube) or too small a market (like the user above) Nobody says the existing monopoly wouldn’t fight back. You make my point by stating that they’d lower their prices.

Some information about The Celtics thank you for the memories signatures Shirt
Thing is, especially in the The Celtics thank you for the memories signatures Shirt and by the same token and Internet space where startup costs are quite low, the mere threat that competition may arise is as much of a threat as actual competition existing. Now, certain things like natural resources, you’re absolutely right – companies can charge far more than they usually could simply because no alternative exists. Alternatives would eventually crop up, yes, but in the meantime things go bad. A more easily digestible and agreeable example if people don’t like the one you provided is power companies. You only have one power company in the area, it’s a monopoly. However, in return for existing as a monopoly, the government is supposed to make sure they don’t charge too much. It’s like a deal, you can be the only business here but you cannot randomly increase prices. The government is doing a poor job here with PG&E raising prices and failing to provide adequate maintenance to infrastructure.
I know here in Canada gas prices aren’t set at a store level and the The Celtics thank you for the memories signatures Shirt and by the same token and only things set at that level are in store goods, is that not true for the states. I’m not as legally versed on this topic as you seem to be, so a question out of curiosity: are there ways for companies to fairly cooperate with each other to create a monopoly? If I’m not misunderstanding, it sounds like the monopoly itself isn’t unlawful, it’s the means used to acquire one that can be. But I’ve been struggling to think of alternate means to create the same monopoly that don’t run afoul of the examples you’ve described as anti-competitive practices Natural monopolies are probably your best bet. Just making a better product or providing a better service. Or I guess if you’re first to something hard you basically are a monopoly.
Theoretically, if you provide the The Celtics thank you for the memories signatures Shirt and by the same token and best version of a good/service for the best price, your competitors will just go out of business leaving you with a monopoly. Highly unlikely in practice, considering other aspects to human behaviour such as brand loyalty, but technically a legally up to code way to end up with a monopoly. You could also get a monopoly through a deal with the government, or through patents. If you are legally the only one who’s allowed to sell a certain good, you automatically have a monopoly for said good. Yup, good example. Then there’s also negotiating contracts with the government to supply utilities or like in some areas there’s only one internet cable company, etc. In the case of drug patents, the government decided that the expense of research and development is so pricey and risky that the limited time monopoly is the only way to encourage it. For utilities, technically there was competition before the contract was signed which makes it okay, even if the contract length could be decades and feel like a monopoly.
YouTube is probably the The Celtics thank you for the memories signatures Shirt and by the same token and best example of this. They are a monopoly because they are just better. If you think of competitors like Vimeo and Chinese knock-offs, youtube is just a better platform, and it’s not from doing shady businesses practices. If anything, it’s the competitors who are shadier. If we are committed to breaking up a monopolist, it wouldn’t be youtube. It would be Alphabet, so that youtube and the various Google services would all be different companies. Depends on the country but probably? Is not like they dont do it anyway, and if not monopolies, established oligopolies Jetblue and American Airlines did have this for a while in New York and Boston, where they could sell codeshare flights and coordinate prices and schedules in a limited number of cases. The idea being that either airline alone couldn’t compete with Delta, United, and other airlines but together they could, and that there would still be enough competition in the market.
(such as the The Celtics thank you for the memories signatures Shirt and by the same token and 8 dominant film studios did in the 1930s and ’40s, when they agreed to only show one another’s films in their theaters Not only this but there’s some companies that are in the same business but just not as successful. Youtube isn’t actively trying to destroy these companies or even buy them. Youtube is just massively successful because of how they started and because they are owned by Google and have just about more resources than anyone else. YouTube lost money for years. Was google keeping something free that “should” have had a cost to keep competitors out? Competitors had the same start in the very beginning but maybe not as much investment. When YouTube was first starting out I’m sure there was some other company we may or may not have heard of that just didn’t gain noteriaty. Another part is that they have multiple products/markets. They have regular Free YT. The is YT Live. There is YT Premium. and then you can also rent movies. And probably a bunch of other stuff too. Then you get market segmentation. Like YT Live is essentially a cable tv substitute. So they compete against cable companies and other live tv streamers. They are not a monopoly there. So really you segment down to “streamers”. Well the channels I watch pitch joining the Patreon for additional content. So there is one competition. I have seen websites have videos as well. So now we segment further into “independent streamers”. Sometimes calling themselves influencers. That also use Insta, Tik Tok, etc. So they use various social media and streaming. So who is YT competition and do they really have the majority of the market?
You don’t have to be doing something to prevent other companies competing in order for the The Celtics thank you for the memories signatures Shirt and by the same token and government to consider you a de facto monopoly. That Is what Google did. They pushed other video site like newgrounds out of relevancy by blocking ad revenue for them I’m not really sure other companies do try to compete, doesnt matter what site, what browser you use they all seem to have the same limited search filters. You’d think after all this time there would be something else, but there isnt, not even for a proper browser/search engine that can find anything n everything. The same company owning the search engine that works as people’s de facto opportunity to find other video streaming platforms, and have that search engine prioritize results from YouTube over others seems like it could qualify as blocking competition… The best example of this, even though it’s old, is John Rockefeller. He would often purchase every single oil barrel in the country at once, and would even partner with most railroads to ensure they ONLY shipped HIS oil. It’s not a monopoly because there are tons of user-content-based video hosting and TV/movie streaming services out there. It’s not the only game in town. And how would you break it up? You.com and Tube.com. They put on all the shorts and Tic Tok shit on You, and the quality content goes back on Tube. Mattpat’s back, in Tube form!
How does this address the The Celtics thank you for the memories signatures Shirt and by the same token and issue of both companies being owned by the same parent organization though? Unless you’re suggesting they forcibly divest YouTube from Alphabet This is the go-to response when someone even mentions that YouTube’s a “monopoly.” Like, there is literally nothing any governing force could do to break it up because there’s nothing to break up to begin with You could decouple it from the rest of google. You could separate the news streaming from the personal uploads from the streaming from the reels. There’s a ton of options. Or, as was the case with the google play store case, the courts could just force a change of business practices. I know they’re out there but only alternative to YouTube as video sharing platform and not just short forms that *I can think of is Dailymotion and Vimeo which is trash ngl Just because the company puts in the effort and work to be the dominant video platform doesn’t mean its their fault other companies are trash. As far as I know, YouTube isn’t actively stifling other company’s ability to compete through nefarious means. Vimeo’s a pretty good platform imo. Older than YouTube even, but it’s not a YouTube alternative. It’s mostly used as a portfolio for videographers for high-quality content. People pay a subscription fee for their videos to be hosted — typically shown free of charge without ads, or others use it to host subscription content or more generally as a CDN. It’s a completely different business model. For example, a filmmaker might use it to host their film privately and send it as a limited-time link for a film festival submission.
Yeah there are dozens of videos hosting and sharing sites. Just because YouTube has the The Celtics thank you for the memories signatures Shirt and by the same token and biggest market share doesn’t make them a monopoly. It is a natural monopoly, and so are many other internet platforms. With youtube specifically, there’s such a high barrier-to-entry in regards to server space and active user base, it means any competition would require another company with an equal amount of monopolization in another field (like, Amazon or Microsoft) to fund another platform to even have a chance at “competing”, but even then it would be an uphill battle that would likely be lost. If you went after Youtube for being a monopoly, then the only real solution to that would be the nationalization of Youtube, because the requirements of youtube as a platform needs a company as large as Google to support it. YouTube built itself up and Google bought it. At the time Dailymotion, Vimeo and others were competing too. The fact it was bought by Google means nothing. Vimeo was bought by College Humour, Dailymotion is owned by Bloomberg, in North America. It isn’t like the alternatives are not owned by companies with funding.
YouTube was bought in 2006, it’s user base and storage requirements were a fraction of what it is now. You could argue there was competition between video services in 2006, you cannot in any way make that case now. If YouTube could’ve supported itself without Google, it would’ve done so. It needed Google or some other large company to acquire it and invest resource in its copyright and server infrastructure to handle the The Celtics thank you for the memories signatures Shirt and by the same token and immense growth in users over the next decade. And IAC purchased Vimeo two months before Google bought YouTube. At the start of 2007 IAC poured time and money in to it to make it better than YouTube. Vimeo was first to high definition and 4K. Once they figured out they couldn’t takeover the market share they changed their business model. Wasn’t there a report that said that, to this day, Youtube hasn’t made a dime of profit, but it’s influence as a media platform is so massive, Google is willing to put up with it?
But when Windows started putting out a web browser with their OS and a media player with their OS, etc., then other companies who made web browsers and medial players sued Microsoft. Because Microsoft was using its monopoly in OS to gain unfair advantage in web browsers and media players. Personal computers aren’t the The Celtics thank you for the memories signatures Shirt and by the same token and only types of computers. When you factor in ALL computers, from servers, to mobile devices, to cars, to random appliances and IOT devices, Linux is by far and away the most used operating system. Is it a monopoly? There are loads of other sites like Netflix and Disney+ that have decent market share. Also apps like TikTok and Instagram get more users than YouTube these days. Netflix and Disney+ aren’t social media platforms. Tiktok and Instagram don’t offer the type of content of YouTube.
Facebook is not focused on videos and it’s not an honest take to compare the The Celtics thank you for the memories signatures Shirt and by the same token and type of videos of Facebook and YouTube. Just because other platforms don’t have the exact features as YouTube doesn’t mean they aren’t competitors. Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, Vimeo, DailyMotion, Twitch, etc all offer the ability to upload/share videos. Why is it YouTube’s fault if they are the preferred platform? They aren’t stifling the competition. Microsoft, Meta, ByteDance, etc have plenty of resources to compete more directly if they want. Also, just because YouTube has a large market share doesn’t mean these other platforms don’t also have large market shares. I’m sure TikTok has an extremely high percentage of young viewers. I guarantee YouTube execs are constantly worried that TikTok or another site could overtake them. I never mentioned or referred to youtube having any sort of fault in whatever subject. All this other services are competitors to yt in terms of wanting people’s time, not in what they offer.
And? I can be a professional swimmer and say that my biggest competitor would be a basketball player, doesn’t make it true. Cause it has competitors and doesn’tsuppress them. It’s a monopoly cause in that industry size and quality are one and the The Celtics thank you for the memories signatures Shirt and by the same token and same thing. So you can’t really do much about it. The other thing about Youtube is that it is very expensive. I don’t know any other platform that can compete with the amount and quality videos Youtube offers. Generally speaking YouTube is part of the Social Media / Entertainment Platform Segment and in direct concurence with TikTok, Meta, Twitch and such. Fairly strong competition I would say. I shit you not, but I never encountered any that would be as flawless as the YouTube one. Twitch, Reddit, Facebook, Vimeo, they never get it right! Yeah, international high-speed high quality video delivery, let alone on a user generated scale like YouTube requires a TON of infrastructure and is very expensive. YouTube was so ahead of the curb, not to mentioned supported by Google so early, that it’s not their fault no one else can compete in the same way. It is. But monopolism is not illegal per se. It’s only illegal to employ abusive practices such as buying out all competitors or dumping ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dumping_(pricing_policy) ) To evaluate a monopoly, you’re not looking at the percentage of people who use it. You’re looking at the quality and number of alternatives.
Most likely, of those 93% of teens they don’t use YouTube exclusively. They also use competing products like TikTok, Instagram, etc. That’s not how you measure a monopoly. 93% of people in a particular age group using something doesn’t make something a monopoly. 100% of those people could also be using tik tok or Instagram or Snapchat. They don’t actively block other companies from competing. There just aren’t a lot of companies that can easily compete due to the The Celtics thank you for the memories signatures Shirt and by the same token and high costs of starting such a business. Google doesn’t “give out search results”… that would undermine their business model which is using the data they have on you to serve up targeted advertisements based on your search and usage history.
There’s really no such thing as a monopoly unless a government makes it so. There will always be some level of competition rising. The concern is anti-trust issues. The reason why Rockefeller got so big and powerful in the The Celtics thank you for the memories signatures Shirt and by the same token and US is because he bought out all oil competition and then used his position to influence politics and regulations. Youtube is owned by Google… who may have some serious anti-trust issues. But Youtube doesn’t really buy out its competition and isn’t really putting in place anything that prevents their competitors from running. The ads program they run is from Google and is its own separate product and company that is open and available to any competitors. The biggest reason would be that they’re not selling videos, they’re selling adverts, and there’s loads of companies doing that.
Because they’re not. There do exist many smaller platforms offering similar services, and Youtube doesn’t try to remove them. It’s a matter of popularity, which isn’t problematic How come no one knows what a monopoly is. A monopoly in the The Celtics thank you for the memories signatures Shirt and by the same token and terms you are thinking of is when a business holds most ways and means of getting to said product or service of that or of a like nature. There are several other video platforms. They just aren’t as popular. Let me clue you in. Having the most of something does not make you a monopoly. If you create a thing, and you are the only one selling that thing, but others can sell that thing, but do not, that is not a monopoly, you just have a monopoly share of business served. If you began to prevent most competitors from existing, then yes, you would then be a monopoly. If you buy out every competitor, you would then be a monopoly. But just existing in a business does not make you a monopoly. Also, google or abc owns YouTube. They are becoming a monopoly. And you can thank all governments for all monopolies for that. The first and foremost reason is that its a market that developed long after the legal definition of ‘monopoly’ took shape. So categorizing what youtube even is, is very difficult. Is it a streaming service? a video hosting platform? a social network? Who/what is its competition? Who does youtube affect? how does it manipulate the market?
