If you have any suggestions or tips then lay em on me I train at Fight City Gym and think it’s fantastic. They have Muay Thai, BJJ, boxing and more. Classes in morning, lunch and evening. And locations at Moorgate, Elephant and Castle, and Balham. Hey I go to Fight City Gym too (Moorgate) would second this – they have a beginners Muay Thai class Wednesday Evenings, and all the boxing classes are newbie friendly I would definitely recommend attending any classes that Harry teaches for boxing and Leon for Muay Thai

Why not learn a martial art for when you aren’t able to run away? Makes no sense to disregard it completely and it doesn’t hurt to have a plan B. They have women’s classes on different days from mens classes so if that makes you feel more protected then you can do grappling BJJ and Judo and Wrestling and some MMA there. Literally any real martial artist will tell you to avoid conflict at all costs IF POSSIBLE. Doesn’t mean knowing how to actually fight doesn’t work, that’s just demonstrably untrue. A month of self defense classes is not going to do anything and it’s probably a grift. Picking up something like Muay Thai and sticking with it will gives you a set of skills that might prove useful in a desperate situation (and it also involves a lot of running). Contrary to what you seem to think, training actually made me less inclined to fight random people as I know how it feels to be punched in the face. Just buy a small can of deep heat. Works like pepper spray. Wouldn’t bother with the combat training unless you are training seriously against grown men.
Because to be really effective at fighting takes lots of time and lots of practice, something like boxing and Judo covers everything a person needs, but to be proficient in both of those takes time and practice, at least two classes of each per a week. And a woman would need to be really good at combat sports because she is at a massive weight and strength disadvantage. It’s the basis of BJJ, Sambo, Kudo, Hapkido and most police forces and military training for the last 100 years and has development events for adult beginners which are great to build your confidence. BJJ is great when you’re on the floor, but you really don’t ever want to be on your back in any self defence situation. I understand I’m probably going to get downvoted for this but 9 times out of 10 the average man is going to outpower the average woman in an altercation regardless of self defence capabilities.
You should definitely look into self defence as I imagine it would give you more peace of mind, and provide you with better knowledge of how to protect yourself, but in my opinion, strength will play a deciding factor in a situation like that. It dosent help that UK self defence laws are an absolute joke, Items like everyday carry knives are legal to possess, but if used against someone (even in situations where you are not the Support Our Veterans Protect The VA Star Shirt besides I will buy this instigator of an attack) you’ll be in the wrong legally and you’ll be facing some serious trouble. That said, violence in the UK and the US is difficult to compare considering the vast differences in law. This is why the rational conclusion is to ensure it is only available for use by police or armed forces, not by the general public. There’s no point, unless you are doing it for fun and physical exercise. I’ve done these classes, and I have even reached black belt after training for over 10 years, and there is nothing I can do if someone pulls a knife on me. I am a man by the way. Your only option is to run or comply. We did drills to protect our selves from a knife attack, if i used these drills in the real world I would be slashed and lucky to end up in hospital, however you will most likely will be buried in the ground. Fightzone in Hackney is highly regarded and has a number of female-only classes. The general classes tend to have decent female turnout, I’d say anything from 10% to 25% of most classes are women, depending on the sport. Lots of female instructors too who are decent and we even have a couple of female european and world champions train here.
Honesty, whatever self defense class you choose, take up running too. A man will overpower you every single time and some even take pleasure when a woman fights back. But knowing how to clatter someone before they’ve got you on the floor is a core concept you won’t get in BJJ / wrestling. In terms of where to go; gyms will generally offer trial classes – why don’t you try a bunch? I’d highly recommend you go to somewhere big. The bigger the gym, the more women will go (important to keep you coming back and give you lots of sparring partners).
There are plenty of women training here, very welcoming and pleasant training environment. Coaches are amazing, great facilities, timetable from 7am to 9pm + they offer women only classes. Any martial art needs to be practiced a ton to be effective and unless it includes plenty of sparring it would be useless in a stressful situation. If you’re interested in martial arts pick something like Brasilian Ju-jitsu, Kyokushin Karate or Muai Thai and keep at it but don’t fall for self defence courses. Edit: Also to keep in mind: Martial arts give you confidence, it doesn’t mean fighting in the Support Our Veterans Protect The VA Star Shirt besides I will buy this first place is a good idea, people start fights when they are scared or have something to prove and those people could carry weapons.
