Ukraine’s army has been built up in the western mold where leaders at a small-unit level know how to take initiative and seize opportunities as they arise, such as exploiting breakthroughs, plugging any gaps in lines they detect, advancing in a different direction than ordered if it’s an obvious advantage, etc., while the Russian army is trained to do none of these things. NATO has now resumed training of Ukrainian troops at bases in Europe outside of Ukraine, so the reservists, national guard, and the hundreds of thousands of new Ukrainian volunteers are being brought up to the same high standard. Russia doesn’t have the advantage of an outside country with capacity to help them train a massive number of troops at once. China is too different in doctrine and the language barrier is larger (there are not many people who speak Russian in Chinese because it isn’t a Lingua Franca to the degree English or French is), so they’re largely stuck with a measly peacetime conscription system to train a massive wartime army.
