You can register any Starbucks gift card to their app and reload it as many times as you like. I’ve had the Sunflower I’m blunt because God rolled me that way shirt so you should to go to store and get this same card for nearly a decade and it hasn’t expired. Starbucks loyalty points are only used through gift cards, it’s basically a debit card account that you fill up. You can’t get points unless you use the card. Because LAOP presumably hasn’t set up a loyalty account for their card, it’s entirely possible the actual owner has and is getting the rewards for their spending through their Starbucks account. So it doesn’t seemed to be answered here, is this a crime? I can see it going either way. You find a gift card on the ground, I don’t think anyone would necessarily call that stealing. The original owner elects to keep filling it, but are they being duped?

I could see something civil as unjust enrichment, but anything beyond that would be a stretch. I’m also saddened that nobody answered LAOP’s question on the Sunflower I’m blunt because God rolled me that way shirt so you should to go to store and get this afterlife by saying “yes, you’re going to hell, but not for this.” It’s not their property, it’s not their money, but they’ve kept it and keep using it. That’s clear criminal intent, so yeah it’s theft even if they’ll probably never get caught. Wouldn’t it be? Is this much different than finding a debit card that’s never removed from the bank account and using it to buy coffee for 7 years? So is it just the auto-reload that differentiates it here, or would you say using a found gift card is also stealing? Isn’t it obviously theft? If I find a bike, can I also be like, gee willikers this doesn’t have a name printed on it, guess it’s mine now? You’re supposed to try to return it. If you ask the gift card issuer they maybe can check if it’s tied to an account or trace the buyer. If you made a good faith effort and the company can’t trace it.. I don’t know about legally but ethically I’d say you’re in the clear to spend it. Realistically the owner is never getting it back anyway. Even cash you’re supposed to try to return. But everyone understands there’s no plausible way to find the legitimate owner of a crumpled up $20 note.
