This method lets the roll actually roll then you put it in the hole when the roll is thinner. Or they’re just lazy. When I worked in a grocery store I’d do some Jerry Seinfeld-level observational standup in my head every time I walked down the paper towel aisle. You’re telling me 2 = 4 on this one, and 4 = 16 on that one? You do the math, we get 2 = 16! Might as well just grab the 2 then. Why bother? If you can make the existing thing work without any difficulty and it doesn’t affect the performance of the thing, keep it and spend your resources elsewhere. There is a myriad of situations where precision matters, this ain’t one.

Like when you need the paper towels because your hands are gunked or wet.
