It’s not a pleasurable experiance, but it’s nothing to get worried about either. Considering you’re scared enough to make this post, I promise you the anticipation you’re feeling is worse than the actual thing. I hate blood work and find if I look away and the nurse drawing the blood is good I don’t even notice it. If they aren’t the best you will feel a small sting when the needle goes in but it’s not bad.

I actually used to have a huge needle phobia because I always had a bad response to them—I’d pass out, basically. Turns out I’m now being investigated for POTS—my autonomic nervous system doesn’t work properly and that contributed to my reaction. Now what I do, is keep as calm as I can. I see the procedure as just a formality, just as simple as awaiting for a food order to arrive or queueing up at the store (although, that’s a bad example—standing in a queue flares me up but getting my bloods taken is a walk in the park compared to standing still). I get called in, and I sit relaxed in the chair, relax my arm until they tell me to clench my fist (gets the veins to pop up), they do the tourniquet and I watch my clinically stretchy skin get all wrinkled from it, then I watch them prep the needle. By this point, I’m moving my feet slowly to keep the blood from pooling in my legs. Then, I just keep up with the slow and steady breathing, and I watch. Some people can’t watch, but for me, watching means it’s not a shock when the needle goes in, and I can see how much longer it’s going to take. Before I know it, it’s over and I’m completely fine.
