Friend just told me that she was on an Amtrak once when we rolled back an hour. I worked night shift for 8 years, when we set time back we had the option to get an hour of OT or to leave an hour early, when we sprung forward we had the option to use your time off bank for an hour or stay an extra hour. Most people (including those who work the night shift) tend to adjust to the clock shift in a few days, if not less. I’m a nightlife photographer and was shooting a rave when the clocks changed. The venue manager told me to stay “until the new 3AM”. Instead of my usual 3 hour shift I did 4. As someone who has a family member working in gas control, they work that extra hour. Pretty sure they get paid. Also, has anyone else realized that’s the one day a year with 25 hrs? And Spring Forward is the one day a year with 23 hrs, so it balances out eventually. My mum was a nurse working night shifts. They just have to work an extra hour. But obviously they get paid for it. Just because the clocks changed doesn’t mean that hour never happened. WE WORK. Cant understand why you don’t understand. Been doing it for 41 years and still blows my mind how people cry and wine about a one hour time change. I work overnight and yes we get paid for and have to work the extra hour. The extra pay is not worth the despair when you see the clock go from 1:59 to 1.

When I worked my overnight shift during the time change, I was initially scheduled for 7 hours, because the time change gave me that 1 extra hour of work to make it 8. We had the option to work 13 hours (1 hour OT) or leave early after 12 hours. When it skips forward we still got paid 12. Don’t think I ever got paid extra. But then I worked enough unpaid overtime in the NHS that a relatively quiet extra hour at 2am really didn’t seem the end of the world. all i can say is that i have never considered this and that’s surprising to me. so, thank you for asking. this has been interesting Hospitals and such, they work 13 hrs on fall back and they work 11 hrs on spring forward rather than the scheduled 12. It’s all about the clock time, not consecutive hours worked. A 24 hr place has to run all 24 hours. Can’t have all hospital staff duck out an hour early, leave patients and machines unattended for an hour just because “we did our 12.” Either the payroll / timekeeping system needs to be programmed for it or the payroll team needs to manually take care of it. We do it manually because they’re all using paper timesheets. Sat night shift? You worked over the 0200 range? You didn’t try to ensure your extra hour manually / sneakily (all other shifts are 1845-0100-0130-0715 but the Saturday shift is 1845-0100-0130-0815? I know what you’re doing so sure I’ll pay it as written but you will not get 14 hrs for that shift. When I was working an overnight shift in news (union job) we would get paid for an extra hour of OT. And then in the Spring when my shift would be one hour less, I still got paid 8 hours. So it wasn’t so bad.
