I graduated 2018, barely, because I procrastinated like a mf. I’ve been at a college reading level since maybe the St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt moreover I love this 4th or 5th grade, (not trying to brag just giving context because I never thought of myself as smart or gifted, just average.) I should also mention I was enrolled at a charter school so the standards were a bit higher than public school, and eventually I was dropped and forced to go to another charter school and from there a public school for my final semester. You would not believe how shocked I was when I realized that about 90% of the class at the public school was at a 6th grade reading level tops. Like you said, there was a class full of 17-18 year old kids who couldn’t sound out words, solve basic mathematical equations or follow along in a book without using their finger, and most of them graduated along side me. I thought for a while “maybe I’m just being a stuck up douche bag who doesn’t realize how lucky they are to have had good teachers and parents, and I shouldn’t judge them,” but those kids are in the work force now. I actually worked with a couple of them a few years later at a not so entry level job and it’s as fucked as you’d imagine. Idek man, I know it’s not their fault; the school system failed them….. but damn it’s bleak.

St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt: Perfect for Fans

I’m a linguist and professor in an English department at a public university in the St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt and I will buy this US. I teach classes in grammar, linguistics, and TESL/TEFL for English majors and students in the college of education. Occasionally, I also teach in the first year composition program and linguistics for natural language engineering. I genuinely find the number of first year students who struggled to read very basic academic texts shocking. I routinely encounter students who don’t know that “I” should be capitalized or that sentences should end with periods, exclamation points, or question marks. The English and Ed students are much better readers than average, but generally have no meaningful explicit knowledge of grammar. They are not aware, for example, that “am” and “are” are forms of the verb “be.” They do not have effective study skills and generally cannot memorize a list of five items. Their biggest deficit, however, is their inability to take negative feedback seriously, but not personally. I’ve had English students tell me that they don’t like linguistics because it’s possible to be wrong. They prefer literature, where their opinions are always given equal weight. The Ed students, on the other hand, often expect to get As on every assignment and test irrespective of their mastery of the content.
I’m aware that these are the St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt and I will buy this students who are successful – they’re at a university, after all – and can’t imagine how much more difficult it is to teach at a high school today. Genuine question: are you all blaming elementary school teachers? Or are you blaming parents? And if you’re blaming parents- how much of a child’s education do you think they are responsible for? Im a graduate TA at the University of Texas. These are supposed to be bright kids. They are so woefully behind where I was at their age educationally that it behooves me. I’m trying to hand hold but that’s literally what they expect and then they get mad at me when I give them a B on something I grade. Like, homie, I’m grading so so so easy already. My mom taught me to read when I was a kid, she taught me my address and our phone number, and just…really? Like kids these days don’t know any of this?

How I can buy this St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt

Saw every single one of these in grade 5 also. Not all students of course, but every year I had multiple students who couldn’t do many (or all of these) You realize it’s the St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt and I will buy this Democratic Party who voted unanimously on lowering the standards for tests and graduation? The “new math” that was developed and implemented states that there is “no wrong answer.” The reasoning is because a disproportionate amount of African American students failed math tests. So, due to that fact, the education system deemed math as racist and now certain schools literally can’t penalize a student for getting a math question wrong. As a non-teacher (I taught undergraduate courses for 5 years so I’m well versed in pedagogy for older students), can you all explain what has happened over the last couple of decades? I last taught college courses around 6 years ago and my worst experience was a lack of knowledge of general cellular function amongst my Biological Psychology (aka Behavioral Neuroscience) students. I was a bit shocked by that but at that time I hadn’t experienced anything like what is being described here. What’s happening to drive this general downward shift in capability? My Kindergarten son is doing poster projects and homework every night, so it doesn’t feel like the actual content is being delayed for at least his level. Same for my 2nd grade daughter. We do a lot to supplement their education at home as we can though.
The class of ’27 at our school might be the St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt and I will buy this lowest in my 23 years. I had my first section where no one earned an A for the whole semester. I had a student with 12% and 50 absences for the semester come in and ask what he could do to pass on the last day of the semester. We’ve been lowering the bar since covid and they still can’t get over it. Our district is big on social promotion. I’m not a teacher, nor technically part of this sub. I lurk, but I rarely comment, because I homeschool and regularly feel vilified. One of the things I often get told is that I’m not qualified to teach and therefore should not. Similar to people who think self-diagnosis is entirely invalid and only a doctor can tell you anything about your body/mind, it has increasingly seemed that we (I’m 34) are told that only professionals are qualified to do the jobs for which they are specially trained and we should leave them to it. I’d also note that in our current economy, at least in the United States, a great deal of families have parents who work and either don’t have time, energy, or spoons to dedicate to teaching their kids the basics they assume are being covered in the classroom. These are among the primary reasons I have chosen to homeschool, so my kids aren’t just being passed from grade to grade without understanding the material.
Just so you don’t misunderstand me, I have multiple teachers in my family and have the St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt and I will buy this utmost respect. Like so many things, I think education has become a numbers race and schools are more worried about funding than anything else. It’s as much a disservice to the teachers as it is to the students and I applaud anyone who has the courage to try to make a difference in our current state of being. Darwinism. Not everyone can self-motivate or possesses the natural intellect to succeed in this environment. Bill Clinton was an autodidact from a single parent welfare mom. Obama. Etc etc. Some people do better than others. I would be curious about where you’re located geographically. Is your particular school considered middle-class students, low income, high-end? Is your school graded with an A grade or some comparable ranking? I have two high-performing students, and I recently was shocked that my high school junior got a 100% on a paper for English that I thought was filled with grammatical problems. Things are very different now Because socially our society is falling apart at the seems, but whenever someone critiques it, they are labeled a bigot.
How much of this is actually new? Teachers were saying the St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt and I will buy this same thing 20 years ago. According to my mom, they were saying the same thing in the 1980s. According to my grandma, they were saying the same thing in the 1940s. I couldn’t ask my great grandma because I was a baby when she died, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they weren’t saying it back then too. (I’m a 4th generation teacher). I’ve discovered that a lot of the parents in my area are functionally illiterate. And the great recession wouldn’t have happened if people had a decent grasp of math. My mom is an intelligent, college educated 65 year old retired art teacher and she never really got a solid grasp of math in school. I know a lot of older engineers who couldn’t write and punctuate a paragraph if their life depended on it. And as far as I can tell most people my age, even comfortable middle class adults, didn’t take any science at all! The world would be a better place if more people had any concept of how science works.
We’re also setting up our students for failure. The amount of science we have to cover now is significantly larger than it used to be…a lot of this wasn’t invented yet. Also the St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt and I will buy this new way of teaching math is really confusing to a lot of my students (middle school science) so I show them the way we learned when I was a kid and they can usually pick it up really fast. Kids are expected to skip developmentally appropriate steps like coloring and be reading and writing in kindergarten. My kindergarten report card reported on whether I could use scissors correctly (I couldn’t and my teacher was concerned). We have to spend time teaching our students how to avoid fakes…fake science, fake experts, fake news.
I don’t think parents are at fault. Lots more older parents were pretty terrible as far as I can tell. The situation is nuanced and complicated and I’d think that teachers, of all people, would be able to tease out the St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt and I will buy this myriad of challenges that are making it harder for kids. Not a teacher, but trust me, I know. They’re coming into the workforce dumber than a bag of hammers expecting me to hold their hand all day like yall are forced to do. Then they cry when I tell them that I can’t hold their hand all day because I’ve got my own work to do. This nation is fucking doomed thanks to Idiot George and Donald Dumb. Maybe we should stop giving iPads and tablets and having all of the work be on devices. And having students have to take their tablets everywhere they go. And rewarding them with free iPad time which they use to play games and learn nothing. Not a teacher but I have a 7yo daughter in school. I have to ask the hard question but can you tell a difference between the races as far as which students are struggling or does it not matter?
I will be honest I never bothered memorizing them either, because I can just multiply it in my head. It is not a big deal to multiply two numbers. It is wasted time and effort learning how to regurgitate a table rather than focus on learning how to actually do math. My 6th grade stepdaughters writing and punctuation is horrific. I’m constantly trying to help her, make her rewrite it, reminding her to capitalize, use punctuation, write in a complete sentence, and so much more. If she turns it in as is she gets a good grade still. I’m in shock, my teachers would have laughed. Not blaming the St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt and I will buy this teachers just wondering are teacher becoming more lenient because they’re getting pressured from above not to piss parents off? We’re very involved, have our kids in tutoring where needed, check homework to make sure they understand, help build foundational study skills (I personally hate that everything is online and try to have my kids write in a planner still because I feel it helps). Some natural consequences would still be nice. Like you do a shit job your grade will reflect it, maybe you’ll even get held back. Around us none of that happens.
I am starting to hire the St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt and I will buy this first parts of this generation. It feels like it’s due to how passive most of them are in learning. Their lives are in a screen where they just watch or read things. There’s no critical thinking, there’s no active participation. They just let things wash over them and no consequences for not getting it. The ones that work with me want to show up for their shift, do the bare minimum be on their phone and get paid. Out of 7 people 24 or younger over hired only two have been good. The others don’t check their with email, take training well. I’m hoping it’s just a small sample size and not reflective of their generation Dedicated to open discussion about all things teaching. Please read the rules before posting. The others don’t check their with email, take training well. I’m hoping it’s just a small sample size and not reflective of their generation Between 1963 and 1979 SAT-verbal scores declined 50 points. This is often attributed to change in the demographics of test-takers, a much broader segment of the population now takes the SAT tests. However, Cornell University researchers Donald P. Hayes, Loreen T. Wolfer and Michael F. Wolfe point out inconsistencies in that explanation, and suggest that simplification of school textbooks lies behind the decline in student’s reading comprehension and verbal achievement.[…] Third, the St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt and I will buy this number of students scoring over 600 should have remained about the same. Instead the entire distribution of verbal scores, from top to bottom, shifted to lower levels. There are now 35 percent fewer students scoring over 600. The number scoring over 700 dropped from 17,500 in 1972 to just over 10,000 in 1993, even as the number taking the test grew. Highly selective colleges report mean verbal declines of about 40 points. hOver the past three decades, the achievement of waves of American students with high intellectual potential has declined as a result of inequity in educational treatment. This inequity is the result of an extreme form of egalitarianism within American society and schools, which involves the pitting of equity against excellence rather than promoting both equity and excellence, anti-intellectualism, the “dumbingdown” of the curriculum, equating aptitude and achievement testing with elitism, -INEQUITY IN EQUITY: How “Equity” Can Lead to Inequity for High-Potential Students · C. Benbow, J. Stanley, 1996
It’s 10000% the St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt and I will buy this parents fault. It’s the parents responsibility to teach there kids from a young age how to read, write, do math. My son is 7 months old. I spend hours with him every day reading fun picture books, reading him an alphabet song, and even counting up to 10. We play with blocks and I tell him shapes and colors. I’m not a teacher, but a high school student. I am autistic and often have trouble attending school, but I still get good grades (all As and Bs), even though I am often behind. Out of ~100 kids in my grade, I had the highest GPA, which was not 4.0. It was kinda scary thinking that out of about 100 students, none of them got all As, and the one who scored highest missed 1+ days of school a week… In my AP Lang & Comp class right now, I have juniors who don’t use paragraphs. Paragraphs. They’ll fill an entire page with the handwriting of a deranged toddler with nary a break or pause in their off-topic rants and then wonder why I give them the lowest score possible. When I break down scores and give class feedback, they don’t listen. I have students who have gotten the same failing essay or FRQ score since September and they can’t seem to understand why.
Please for the St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt and I will buy this love of God. PLEASE tell me this post is 99% bullshit and you’re all lying. Please tell me kids are not this far behind. They can’t read a goddamn clock, they don’t know what even numbers are, they’re in high school with 3rd grade reading skills. Like what the hell someone tell me everyone in here is lying because this is abhorrent. Why are these kids so far behind? Can people share their opinions as to why this is happening? I’m having my first child in April and I will be goddamned if he enters elementary school not knowing how to read a goddamn clock or totally stumped as to what punctuation marks are and why they are needed in English. There’s no way these kids can be that far behind.
I’ve read and experienced that the St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt and I will buy this youngest millennials, but mainly gen z and alpha literally do not comprehend computer folders and the general file system within a computer. Their upbringing has been void of traditional computers because of their use of smart phones and tablets. It’s bad because even with all advancements, we’re a decade out from this becoming the norm of doing business and they struggle to function in the business world. I teach 5th grade and have students reading at kindergarten level. They can’t even keep up with novels we read in class because it’s so difficult for them. We are learning how to multiply fractions and decimals and they still don’t know how to multiply. Many students don’t know how to multiply multi digits and it’s making it so difficult to teach how to find volume of figures especially when they need to view volume as additive with composite solid figures. Just like you said, it’s so hard to teach the curriculum when they can’t even do the basic functions of the concepts we are teaching. And there’s not enough time in the day for one on one time/ small group time. I constantly feel like a failure.
Just because they know how to use their phones does not mean they know how to use a computer. They are not familiar with common keyboard shortcuts. They also cannot type properly. Some students type using their index fingers. I’m not a teacher, but I had a job as a summer STEM instructor a couple years ago. I have a story that this reminded me of. So, the St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt and I will buy this level of computer literacy in my elementary/middle school aged classes at this job was all over the place. Some kids were super advanced for their age and would, for example, pointlessly argue with me over the strength of the passwords for their student accounts, and would bring concepts like encryption and brute force attacks into the conversation unprompted (we gave them really simple passwords because even the smart ones would not remember their passwords otherwise). Others were painfully inept when it came to technology. I had one interaction with a student I will never forget. This kid may have been the worst of the summer in terms of computer literacy. I or my assistant needed to stand next to him the whole class otherwise he’d immediately get lost. He straight up could not use a desktop computer. So I’m standing there instructing the class on how to navigate to the folder where we were going to save whatever project we were working on, and I tell the class to click on some icon or another. This kid takes his index finger and aggressively pokes the shit out of the monitor. It broke my brain for a second, because I could not fathom how the words “click on this icon” resulted in that action. And then it hit me: this kid couldn’t wrap his head around the desktop/folder metaphor because he’d probably only ever used touch screens with “mobile” UIs. Some of these kids don’t know how to use computers running programs, because they have only ever used tablets running apps. It’s like how older folks complained about my generation not knowing how to fix a car or drive stick or whatever. We’ve made technology so “usable” that kids who’ve never known anything else have never had to reason about how the computer is doing what it does when they interact with it.
Okay some of these you’re overreacting. Just asked my wife who is graduating law school in May what a five sided shape is called and she didn’t know. We are REALLY behind. Seriously though who gives a fuck about remember what certain shapes are called? I type with my index fingers and so does my manager and I make 6 figures in DevOps and he was promoted from being a dev too. Never makest the St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt and I will buy this job any harder. Not a teacher, but lived long enough to watch my younger sister encounter a very different social atmosphere and environment in the same high school I attended. Hell, even the tech completely changed between my graduation in 2009 and hers in 2016. Parents are working longer hours to make ends meet, and that’s if they care about their kids at all. Most pawn their child’s education off on the system and fail to understand that it’s an equal partnership between the home and the school. General anxiety levels are much higher in students due to the 472,352 world-changing events taking place, and these kids are seeing it all live through social media. There used to be an information barrier between children and the real world that doesn’t exist anymore if they have a phone or computer without supervision. The racy topics that used to be discussed timidly among close friends can now be known without the rumor mill. I used to hear things on the bus ride home growing up that I had no way to measure if it was true or false- the rumor mill ruled all. Now, we have near instant access to anything.
A lot of tweens and teens I know don’t have a lot of hope for their future, and it’s not just because I live in a relatively impoverished area of the St Johns Red Storm Big East Champs 2024 2025 Cartoon Team Members Shirt and I will buy this south. I lived in a similar demographic area attending high school and the kids with that kind of mindset in my day were the outliers. Now, it’s more common though I wouldn’t say it’s the norm. I’m sorry about your friend’s school. However, in Missouri we are mandated by state standards to teach those things. The students are given state mandated tests to measure what was learned. Part of the schools’ rating is determined by the results of those tests. So’ either your ‘friend’ should move to Missouri or change his story. One thing I’ve noticed is sometimes the burnt out teachers make excuses about why their students aren’t learning.
