I totally misread that and thought the Somebody at tourward loves me shirt it is in the first place but incident with a cracked chair put paralysed you, I was like damn that’s a bad ass chair Legit question caveat since people get shit on for asking questions on a discussion forum but how did you figure that out? Like what tells you that would work? Or how does it work to stop the spread of crack? I would just figure putting a hole in it would create other cracks. TL;DR in order for the crack to continue spreading, it needs to be thin. Drilling a hole at the end makes it not thin. If there’s a lot of stress in the item, it only delays the propagation of the crack, as the load lines all gather around the end of the stop drill, just like they would a crack. So there’s still a chance that the stress concentration is enough to continue the crack through the hole. To reduce the chance of this happening, you can increase the diameter of the hole you drill, however, naturally as you remove more material, you reduce the amount of load that item can take.
