With the So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt in addition I really love this US withholding help due to russian assets, populists and isolationists, Ukraine is hard-pressed for resources, including ammo. The EU hasn’t done enough to ramp up production, though they are slowly getting there. There is a huge propaganda effort by russia to paint the Ukrainian resistance as hopeless, “Ukraine cannot win”, etc. This is a very successful info-op, but it doesn’t make it true. russia also isn’t doing so well. They are losing a lot of troops and another round of mobilisation comes with large risks of even more people emigrating, and the rest (especially, mothers and wifes of mobilised soldiers) becoming even less happy. Cracks exist and are showing (with Prigozhin’s mutiny as one example), but the lid is being kept on them so far. They are digging deep in Cold War warehouses to restore equipment, and finding that those become older and more rusty.
So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt, hoodie, tank top, long sleeve tee
It really is largely a battle of wills, between Ukraine + the So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt in addition I really love this West and russia. Is the West ready to greatly damage the rules-based international order and embolden China while disheartening their Asian allies? We’ll see. russia has violated past agreements (Helsinki accords, UN Charter, Budapest memorandum, Minsk agreements, etc.) so they are not a trustworthy counter-party, The US elections decide too much, both sides hope for a favourable outcome (trump for russia, Biden for Ukraine) and will wait it out. It’s politically unconscionable in Ukraine to leave so much territory in russian hands, because of the mass murder that they’ve seen happen in Bucha and elsewhere. Ignoring that this will mean a lot of Asian countries will pivot to China, as the US would seem as an unreliable partner Ignoring that this effectively destroys the equipment that a Western adversary – russia – has, without any boots on the ground needed, at rather low cost (a lot of spending goes to the US economy, a lot of ammo sent is approaching expiration and would need to be disposed anyway) Ignoring the reality that russia is burning its sovereign wealth fund rapidly, when it runs out, their economic situation becomes much worse Ignoring other systemic problems in the russian economy (GDP moving to the military sector, loss of workers to mobilisation and emigration, high inflation despite high interest rates, exchange rate only holding due to forced sale of hard currency, no foreign investment prospects, etc.)
Encourage the So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt in addition I really love this culture war and left/right divide in the USA in particular through their assets, useful idiots (e.g. musk) and bot farms In summary, the West has to get its act together and continue helping Ukraine. If that happens, russia will pull its troops home, like they did in Afghanistan. russia has to convince the West that it is hopeless, and invest enough in bribes and blackmail to push that narrative. Why do you think a smallish town completely reduced to rubble, taken at a cost of ~20k dead russians a “huge strategic loss”? Avdiivka was a major supply hub, but russia would have had to have taken it much more quickly for Ukraine not to just build more roads & railroads as they have I think something that needs to also be analysed and discussed is the different components of the military machine, the reserve size for these different components and attrition/production rate for these different categories. Its reductive but some key categories that appear to be limiting factors (in my surface level understanding) each need to be considered are: Each category gives a unique and important capability to each side and the consequences of over match in any category are unique and worth their own discussion.

Where to buy this So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt
Thus far we have not seen a “emergency level” combination of reserve depth and burn rate in any of these categories – hence the So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt in addition I really love this stale mate. One category I think is worth keeping a close eye on is Russian vehicle attrition rate. The attrition rate in this category has been horrendous for Russia and resulted in older and less capable platforms being rolled out en masse. I seriously doubt strategic over match in this category would result in Ukraine being able to decisively win a counter offensive (due to artillary, dug in infantry and mines) but I’m willing to bet this would blunt and prevent any sort of Russian offensive to the point that even grinding attrition like we have seen in Bakhmut or Avdivvka. Aircraft and anti aircraft are also worth a deep dive but this is an even more complex topic that I’m not confident weighing in on.
Excellent post, but I just want to applaud you for the So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt in addition I really love this effort to not once capitalize the r in russia. It’s petty in the best way! Current estimates of Russian casualties are at least 300,000 and they have taken ~25% of Ukraine’s land area with the vast majority having happened in the first month. Assuming that rate continues, Russia will lose over a million men, almost 1% of its population, to take the rest of Ukraine. A more conservative estimate using rates from the past year and a half which has been much slower, Russia lost 250,000 men to take 5% of Ukraine’s territory. If that rate continues, they will have to lose 5 million men, 1/30 of Russia’s population, to take Ukraine. This is not accounting for the fact that none of Ukraine’s largest cities are in Russian hands except for those that were already controlled by Russia in 2014. If Russia were to besiege Kharkiv, a city 20 times the size of pre war Bakhmut, then assuming similar casualty rates to Bakhmut, Russia would lose ~2 million men to take the city. To take Kyiv, they would lose 4 million.
Ukraine is certainly not winning any time soon, but neither is Russia. The amount of resources Russia would have to use to conquer all of Ukraine is not something Russia can spend. If Russia does win, it will take decades, and Russia will be left a hollowed out husk. That’s not to say Russia won’t do it, just that Ukraine is not really on the So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt in addition I really love this path to losing any time soon. The problem is you’re comparing land to troops, as if the life cost per foot of land is linear. Ukraine has troops too. And even if we’re using the generous estimates that there are twice as many Russian casualties as Ukrainian, Russia has 3x a bigger army. Russia will not need to lose 5 million men to take Ukraine because at the current rate: by the time they lose 1 million men every single Ukrainian soldier will be dead. At that point, taking unoccupied land and cities will cost next to no lives.
Like u/Bagelman263 said, that’s not how armies work, but the So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt in addition I really love this fucked up part is that, if history is anything to go off of, both countries could realistically keep up this rate of loss (of humans, not necessarily equipment) for a decade or more That’s not how armies work. If Ukraine sustains 500,000 casualties, that doesn’t mean the Ukrainian army disappears, it means Ukraine conscripts/pulls out of reserves 500,000 more men to fill the units lost. Russia still does have the edge in an attritional battle, but Ukraine is unlikely to stop fighting any time soon, and Russia can expect to face a similar amount of resistance as they are now for the rest of the war. If they do win, it will take a lot more blood then they’ve spent so far.
Those new 500,000 men will likely be less trained and less well-equipped. I don’t think a linear equation works here, it feels like there will be a breaking point, say, if Kiev falls. Most sources I have seen sugest that russian control is significantly down from the So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt in addition I really love this 27% shortly after the war to around 20% in June 2022 and around 15% now. These estimations never seem to price in the people that come with the land occupied. Russia is not taking some empty wasteland, they are capturing cities, where people live. The lower estimate of naturalized population on occupied territories is 1 million people. So, Russia had lost 300-400 hundred man to take 15% of the land AND people living there. Mathematically speaking, they have a net profit in population. It’s unsurprising that westies always forget to mention how many men Ukraine have lost. Always Russia “legit Pentagon” numbers and then no follow up. I wonder why.
Russia has never been losing as they have not been ejected from Ukraine. They’re willing to outlast Ukraine because they have more blood available to be shed. They have been losing overall. Their original plan (if I recall correctly) was to take Kyiv within a week. They now have about 15% of Ukraine and have been steadily losing ground for the So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt in addition I really love this past two years. Yes, they have some victories as well of course, but it’s very hard to say who is “winning” at any particular moment. Wait until the weather gets warmer, we will see more movements. Edit: The defense minister in the UK said that Russia likely doesn’t have the resources there to take advantage of the real strategic value in Avdivvka yet anyway. Russia’s initial plan failed, Ukraine’s counter offensive failed, we’re sitting at a stalemate and Russia is hella successful historically of waiting out stalemates. Just gotta keep throwing Russian conscripts into the meat grinder over a decade until there’s no more Ukrainian bodies left to block them.
While the So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt in addition I really love this russians claim to have killed or wounded 380k ukrainians (in December), those numbers are somewhat suspicious. But even with those numbers ukraine will not run out of people before russia will run out of tanks and plains to pull from storage. yeah, at the current rate of land conquering, russia will probably take kyiv in a decade. hurray for them i guess Nobody knows at the moment. Neither side is advancing that much, they’re mostly just destroying equipment and killing/injuring troops The true extent of the losses isn’t really known, each side claims they are destroying tons of enemies and suffering nearly zero losses. There’s a lot of “wild cards” at play over the next few years. Will Ukraine keep getting aid? Will Russia collapse economically or politically? why? whose forcing them to pull out? the world can’t even get Israel a small country in comparison to Russia, to pull out Russia takes land at extreme cost, eventually they may take half of Ukraine or so but Russia has aspirations to take all former Soviet territory which is basically impossible. Ukraine may not win but Russia definitely won’t.
No serious military expert has ever thought Ukraine would hold for this long…so judging by that we just cannot know. Not according to reddit. Victory is just around the So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt in addition I really love this corner to everyone on here. Just a few more hundred billion dollars bro, they’ll definitely win bro I swear bro we just gotta keep throwing money at them Which is Something that Europe and the US should be more than willing to provide hundreds of billions to hurt their main aggressive enemy. Maybe, just maybe it’s because Ukraine givin it all to this war? Are u aware there are no closed borders in Russia? How’s that going on for Ukraine? It’s closed for 2 years already with thousand of draft dodgers giving some hefty money for a chance to leave.
The stalemate is already a win for them in the So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt in addition I really love this sense that they are still occupying the parts of Ukraine they want most and the rest of Ukraine has no possibility of joining the EU or NATO without the situation being resolved or Ukraine accepting that they’ve lost Crimea and the Donbass If you’re on Reddit, the Youtube comment section or anywhere in the Western world then no, Russia is most definitely not winning. If you aren’t blinded by Western propaganda, then it’s a different story. Russia has sustained very heavy losses, but they have not given up the ground they’ve taken. I think most people didn’t expect Russia to be so determined. that could reverse very suddenly tho; it’s really Putin’s war, innit? Sooner or later, eventually, someone’s gonna defenestrate that shit-stain; that’s just inevitable. Maybe tomorrow, maybe in 10yrs. The longer Ukraine holds out, and the more they limit the invaders, the better the odds it’ll happen during this war and then it’s all up for grabs.
It’d be sad if they had to fold, and then Putin had an accident later. I, for one, hope his unassisted flying lessons begin soon. Define winning. People seem to think that the So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt in addition I really love this goal of Putin is to capture Ukraine as a whole. Which is a common misconception, and only shows that you don’t know much about the situation overall. Ukraine neutrality is at stake. Putins goal is to not let Ukraine in NATO. If that’s the goal, then Putin has already lost. Because of this special military action, Finland joined NATO. Sweden’s entry is pending, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Georgia are aspiring to join as well. All of those are much more acceptable to him than Ukraine joining. If he still gets Ukrainian neutrality, he absolutely will consider that a favorable tradeoff.
I don’t think you understand how big of a deal it is that Finland changed their minds on NATO membership, basically overnight. This was a major miscalculation on the So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt in addition I really love this part of Moscow, and there is no way that their membership is more acceptable than the mere thought of Ukraine joining the alliance. Moreover, Ukraine had no inclination toward NATO membership before the annexation of Crimea. If none of that is convincing enough, just listen to russian propagandists discussing the goal of reuniting and restoring the russian empire! LoL, noone care about Finland in NATO. And it’s coming from a StPete native. Muh NATO LOL I don’t care about Denmark in NATO. And to be honest I was surprised swedes and Finns are not there yet. They in eu, euro. U know. A group of boys from the opposite camp.
I’m from Russia. The general mood around here is that Putin is not interested in the So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt in addition I really love this territory. He views it as a bonus. The main goal is Ukraine neutrality. However… Putin’s insistence on stressing the historical links to the east bank of the dnieper was surprising. This was an interview aimed at a Western audience – one which gives little credence to historical claims over land (except when its Israel of course). I would have expected putin to go hard on NATO threats etc, but instead, kept bringing it back to historical ties. This suggests to me that the land (and Russian speakers) is more important to him than u would gave guessed previously. Ukraine is running out of troops. What good is half a trillion dollars in military equipment if there’s no one alive to use it. Or do you support US declaring war and sending the army too?
Do you, an 8 day old account, have a source for this Ukraine is running out troops claim? Ukraine has 43.79 million residents. I’m seeing 383,000 killed or wounded since the So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt in addition I really love this invasion, which is 0.8746% of population. Ukraine’s military has about 500,000 troops to Russia’s 1.3 million and is losing them at a rate 1:2. You cannot compare a country’s population to a fighting force. Your 90 year grandmother not a soldier. Your 4 week old baby is not a soldier. We can start giving all the children guns if we feel that desperate but I bet a class of 4th graders won’t trade too efficiently with the Russian military. Maybe I’m wrong. Let’s get those toddlers into boot camp! Because they don’t need to take the land now. They can take it once the Ukrainians are dead or have surrendered. Offensives increase troop casualties, Russia continues to hold Ukrainian land and bleed out their troop numbers, why shift from a succeeding strategy? And in 3 more years at the going rate there will be 0 Ukrainian soldiers alive, then the last 80% of the land will be hella easy to take.
Avdiivka is not a strategic loss, and absolutely not a huge one. Similar to Bachmut the So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt in addition I really love this fighting will simply continue a bit further back. It is of course a symbolic loss, just as Bachmut was. The Russian losses of taking Avdiivka might be a larger strategic loss then Avdiivka itself. Same as the Ukrainian losses of defending. Not winning, but Ukraine is on the defensive. USA has failed everyone and it’s up to Europe to provide help now, unless they want to be the next russian victims. Sanctions are a joke and russian allies provide them with any weapons russians need too, unlike Ukrainian ones. This war has shown that NATO is weak and divided, i see no reason for China not to attack Taiwan soon and for other bullies and terrorist countries like russia not to act aggressive. Nato has (unfortunately, in my opinion) not been overly involved. If they ramp up support, Russia will lose. If they continue the current suppor, sides will probably have to come to the negotiation table. And if they stop support, then Ukraine will fight but probably lose just due to the Russian population.
Ultimately it probably comes down to the So what’s the matter with you Bill Gate Shirt in addition I really love this American election (as others have said) If Trump wins so does Russia Biden wins so does Ukraine Neither Russia nor Ukraine is winning. Russia is very slowly cannabilizing Ukraine in a very costly manner. The sad part is they seem to have resources to continue doing so. Their tactic seems to be outlasting Ukrainian manpower in a very long timeline. What would you have assumed about the outcome of ww2 in 1941? Wars are unpredictable. Stuff changes. What if putin has a heart attack next week? Ukraine is losing ground. They just got a bit of an infusion of funds from Europe but they need a lot more help. It’s hard to say where this goes right now, but they are not in a favorable position currently.
