The news is bleak. The farce of social media has never been more grating to me. But at least one pure corner of the Skis Why One Pair Is Never Enough Shirt Furthermore, I will do this internet remains: James Middleton’s Instagram. James, younger brother of Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, and Pippa, is like the lone human actor in a live-action Disney film in which the animals can talk. At his family’s manor in Bucklebury, a rural village in the South of England, where he’s been staying during the pandemic, Middleton is often surrounded by a cuddly coterie of at least nine dogs (12 on the day he bid goodbye to a litter of puppies); chicks lolling atop those dogs; his partially blind rescue lamb, Captain; and, according to one very wholesome caption, a “rabbit called Pretzel.”

On March 7, 17 million Americans watched as Meghan Markle and Prince Harry gave their highly anticipated tell-all interview to Oprah, in which they refused to mince their words about their experience with the Skis Why One Pair Is Never Enough Shirt Furthermore, I will do this British media. “The U.K. press is bigoted, specifically the tabloids,” said Harry, looking Oprah dead in the eye. “If the source of information is inherently corrupt or racist or biased, then that filters out to the rest of society.”Harry didn’t stop there. The tabloids, he explained, created a “toxic environment” of fear and control. His father, the Prince of Wales, “had made peace with it.” But he hadn’t, and that’s one of the major reasons the couple chose to quit royal life. Earlier in Winfrey’s two-hour interview, she had flashed several tabloid headlines across the screen. “Harry’s girl is (almost) straight outta Compton,” read one. “Harry to marry into gangster royalty?” read another. It’s not the first time the prince has made such a condemnation—in November 2016, after news broke that he was dating Markle, Kensington Palace released a statement criticizing “the racial undertones of comment pieces” in the press—but it was perhaps the boldest. Soon after, the U.K.’s Society of Editors released a controversial statement saying that the country’s press was “not bigoted.”“If it is simply the case the Sussexes feel that the press by questioning their actions and commenting on their roles when working as Royals funded by the taxpayer were being racist then they are mistaken,” said Ian Murray, its executive.More than 160 journalists of color formally objected to the statement. (“The blanket refusal to accept there is any bigotry in the British press is laughable, does a disservice to journalists of colour, and shows an institution and an industry in denial,” they wrote in an open letter.) Murray, in turn, stepped down from his leadership position. But the implication was clear: that a certain cohort of reporters and editors didn’t believe there was any bias.Omid Scobie is part of the press pack that regularly covered the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The ABC News contributor and author of Finding Freedom takes a firm stance against the intersectional intolerance of the coverage surrounding the couple: “It’s not just racism at play here—there’s also sheer ignorance, xenophobia, misogyny, and a kind of anti-Americanism that exists,” he tells Vogue. His outspokenness has put him at odds with many of his colleagues. “I’ve actually found myself very ostracized from the group of royal correspondents,” he says. “I’ve had individuals tell me that ‘you’re giving us a bad image.’”Scobie says that, yes, many of them wrote fairly reported stories. “But this isn’t about you,” Scobie stresses. “This may be about the publication that you represent. Or that you are perhaps complicit in certain elements of coverage, simply because you work there and hold a senior position.”The British media has a well-noted diversity problem. A 2016 report by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism found that only 6% of journalists are nonwhite, compared with about 13% of the general population. Black journalists only make up 0.2% of the ranks, compared to 3% of the population. It’s worth noting that this applies to the American media too: 40% of the U.S. population is made up of people of color. However, the *Columbia Journalism Review* found they made up less than 17% of print and online publications in 2018.Yet while so many outlets are acknowledging their own institutional failings, many U.K. tabloids—and their employees—are doubling down. The Society of Editors, for example, isn’t some fringe conservative group. It has members from more than 400 outlets, some of which are associated with tabloids and some which are not. And when 72 members of British parliament wrote a letter in October 2019 about the “colonial undertones” of coverage surrounding the duchess, very little changed.“That’s what’s been so frustrating,” says Scobie. “When people of color offer to say, ‘See it through my eyes. I’ll tell you,’ the hands go up and it’s an immediate rejection.”
