As someone who studied audio / music technology stuff – I would imagine pilots wear headsets to announce and obviously pilot a plane. The chances of pilots wearing their mic too close to their mouth, speak way too loudly thus clipping the audio, or not positioning their directional mic correctly thus the mic can’t capture the right audio signal…etc can easily cause their speech hard to understand. And don’t forget accents and lack of seeing their mouth move also contribute to harder to understand speech. Some airlines have the PA audio routed to the entertainment display’s audio output (headphones). Through those, I can understand what the pilot is saying. I think before a pilot is even allowed to use the microphone, they have to log 500 hours of working a drive through microphone, and 1000 hours of “the speech” you hear before the roller coaster starts moving.

Now on an NYC subway… They might as well just stop the announcements altogether. Pilot here. You’ll be surprised by how many pilots just don’t know how to talk clearly into the microphone. It’s the weirdest phenomenon because in most airliners we wear headset on a live loop intercom where we can hear everyone using that intercom line and ourself because it’s loud in the flight deck. But some pilots will for some reason move their mic closer in whenever they make a PA when it was just fine for the intercom. So it causes the mic to not pick up very well what your saying because now your too loud for the mic to work effectively. It’s weird because the if you hear yourself fine in the intercom, there’s not need to adjust for the PA…. I never understood why they speak like an auctioneer, a slow few words followed by fast pitched talking that goes up and down, slow down then speed on for a while.
