If you are really nervous, ask to go to a full-time phlebotomist rather than a general nurse – They do up to 6 blood draws an hour, eight hours a day, every day of the School Bus Driver if You Think My Hands are Full T-Shirt but in fact I love this week, for years at an end, so they are a billion times faster and smoother than the average nurse who might only do blood a few times a week. I get blood tests every few months or so because of my thyroid If you drink a load of water the hours leading up to it, it can make the veins easier to find for whoever doing it. Ways you can help reduce the pain that I use is by staying hydrated, drink plenty before, tell them as soon as you get in the room you’re worried about pain/ scared of needles and they may lie you down, use a butterfly and be generally nicer to you. I close my eyes everytime and I have to get blood drawn every 3 months. It gets better with each go, you get less nervous. Oh – final thing, relax (which I know is hard but take a deep breath in and let it go slowly- that helps) Pain is a very subjective thing. I’m a midwife and have probably taken blood from 1000’s of women over the past 12 years, the vast majority of them find it very tolerable. The needle used is tiny, you feel a sharp scratch/pinching sensation as it pierces the skin, but it usually just lasts a few seconds. Occasionally I come across women with trickier veins and it takes a bit more “digging around”, but is still generally tolerated well.
