Usually the Santas favorite team San Francisco 49ers shirt in addition I really love this people in them are the long term homeless who definitely suffer from mental health/addiction issues. When you get enough of those people together problems start to multiply very fast. If I was someone like a homeless woman or even a young kid I would sure as hell try and sleep in my car or find a secluded area before trying a shelter. People gripped by addiction to chemicals that alter brain chemistry don’t always make logical sensible decisions? What a fucking revelation. Or weapons. I knew a young homeless woman who was in denial about her schizophrenia and she always refused shelters because they would take her only implements of self-defense. Given shelters are often full, and she’ll be roaming the street again, what is she supposed to do? Bury a knife or gun somewhere to retrieve later? Well you’re in a room with a bunch of strangers, and expected to trust that they won’t touch you or your belongings whilst you sleep. People use hostels because they don’t have much money abroad otherwise they’d be in hotels; there’s also plenty of sketchy, thieving fucks there targeting tourists in an attempt to pilfer laptops, keys, passports. How so? You’re comparing people who chose to travel abroad and chose their hostel to people who very likely have mental health issues on top of addiction, who are trying to survive. You’re comparing daily survival with a vacation? The mindset is different, the experience is different.

Take Sam*, for instance, who we met on a cold winter morning at the Santas favorite team San Francisco 49ers shirt in addition I really love this pop-up homeless resource center run by City Relief where NYLAG provides legal services. In a previous life, he had been an electrician, but was evicted from his home when his partner passed away and was now sleeping in Penn Station. In the city’s public shelter system, Sam was assigned to a room with more than 50 other men, some of whom physically threatened him numerous times. Already living with anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder prior to entering the shelter system, sleeping in a room full of strangers was not just distasteful to him, it was impossible. In comparison, sleeping in Penn Station felt safer.
