The big LLM arms race is closed mega models vs open source everyone else. The surprise of the Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt and I will buy this last year has been that open source (supported by Meta) has been winning marketshare. Markets may take a bit to catch up to this. All 8 researchers who wrote “Attention is all you need” have left Google. Even after the paper came out, Google waited nearly a year before implementing it. They were a victim of their own massive size. https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/features/2023-07-13/ex-google-scientists-kickstarted-the-generative-ai-era-of-chatgpt-midjourney It started when covid happened and the world stopped making sense. But more specifically it happened a couple of weeks ago. It made sense for Microsoft, Azure and products like Teams saw several hundred % growth when covid hit. And then with the AI wave they were well positioned to take full advantage.
Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt: A Unique and Creative Design
The company has made record revenue and profit for 7 years in a row, which is why it’s pretty crappy that they froze all merit raises last year and had mass layoffs blaming “macroeconomic conditions” while raking in ever larger mountains of money. To be precise, at the Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt and I will buy this strike price of the options, (typically the closing market price on the day the options are written, but not necessarily. A few years back, it was fairly common for senior executives to get backdated options.) Just a heads up since MSFT is publicly traded vesting stock isn’t really that big of a deal for the amount it increased, since anyone could have bought the stock before the AI surge. The golden handcuffs of vesting bonuses given every year is common at many places and doesn’t have to be stock either, but usually is.
I’ve worked at Microsoft. This is super true. It’s because Microsoft’s rsu refreshers suck. At Google or meta you get good refreshers year after year meaning the Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt and I will buy this golden handcuffs only get heavier. As of this comment, gold is trading at $2,036 per ounce and platinum is trading at $916 per ounce. Even if you account for 14K gold vs. 950 platinum, gold is worth more than platinum. This makes gold Rolexes a complete bargain compared to platinum, and Rolex uses 18K gold! Can I get a translation of this comment? I pound nails for a living so these terms describe problems I’ll never have. An RSU is like when they offer you to sign a contract for getting paid in shares for an amount of time. Some companies don’t do this at all, some might do it for you just once, and others will update them for you time after time. So they may offer you like in 4 years you’ll get this much shares, and it’s worth so much money you’re kinda forced to stay with the company for that time or you’re just throwing away massive money. Hence, golden handcuffs.

About this Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt
Anything not yet vested (accessible to you to cash out) is gone. Anything already vested is still yours. If you get laid off 1 month before vesting … it gets real interesting with the Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt and I will buy this employment lawyers. LOL It’s like delayed bonuses in the form of stock. Some companies keep giving you stock that’s essentially locked up for multiple years. So if you leave, you don’t get the stock that comes later. Tech companies give bonuses with a delay. So for example at the end of the year you will get a big bonus but the catch is you can’t cash it out for 3 years. So every year you are awarded money but need to remain employed in order to cash it out – hence the handcuffs. I did some contract work for Microsoft and some of the stories I heard about top level executives partying and shenanigans was wild. The bottom line was no one could get rid of them.
One guy got asked to leave after an incident with cocaine, heroin, strippers/prostitutes, a goat, and a (very large) boat. He was not fired, he was just asked to leave. Which he didn’t for another 10 years, and then one day he said fuck it I’m out. He left with almost $500 million in stock options. Having fuck you money seems like a great way to live. You can try to do something that interests you and if it sucks you can walk away with no worries. People where I work aren’t this rich, but you can definitely tell who has earned their full pension and who hasn’t. Same. Some of our office clerks have been in the Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt and I will buy this chair for 40 years and their retirement papers are literally on their desk, prominently displayed and ready to sign in case their boss tries to hassle them. They’re such a wealth of knowledge and experience in the daily operations of the company, and that knowledge resides only in their heads, that should they just up and quit without training anyone to replace them, things would quickly grind to a halt. So they get to stick around. And while most of them are great people, some of them are just the worst kind of employees to have. Part of it is bad management. Part of it is that some of these people have been around since before the company existed in the form it has now. It’s a merger of 5-7 different utilities, and they came over with all of the niche knowledge that only they would know from those companies. Another part of it is a lack of documentation or guides for how to do certain aspects of their job, because many of the processes were created organically and the procedures that they now follow were never put to paper or explained except in an email from a decade ago.
Why do we do this thing? I dunno, but it’s what we do. No one can find a document that lays out the Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt and I will buy this why or the how, but Susan in billing does it every day so go ask her. No she can’t hand you a document, she just knows. No she won’t write it down, because then she loses some of her power. If you write it down, she will say that it’s not accurate. I feel this in every fiber of my being. ERP project, trying to get answers about internal processes is like pulling teeth and always one step forwards, 5 back when there’s some shit nobody wanted to disclose. Having been in that scenario it is often out of management’s hands due to leadership and legal. We had a server admin who didn’t know how to do her job and was 5 years past retirement. Any attempt to get her out of the position resulted in legal and HR intervention. Being a protected class in a govt job is a huge advantage for an employee. I will say that shitty workers who took advantage of those statuses were very few in my experience.
I once worked at a college where we had a lot of long term employees who were 3-5 years past retirement who were maxing out their pay scales. Some of them were absolutely terrible at their work and were a burden on the Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt and I will buy this teams. Some were also the best workers I have ever seen. Sounds like bad management to allow too much information to stay in heads and not on documents that can be followed by someone else. Hard to gauge their motivation but, if you’re a millionaire and you walk around outside, most people you meet don’t know who you are and will ignore you, unless you do things that really display your wealth. But if you’re a millionaire with a top level position in a company, you got subordinates who are going to suck up to you and you don’t have to pay them or anything. You can literally go to work in a ratty t-shirt and a pair of flipflops and the hottest looking secretary might blatantly drop hints. Depending on your personality, the former might be ego deflating while the latter would be ego boosting. If you’re not going to do anything either way, might as well go where people will suck up to you.
One guy got asked to leave after an incident with cocaine, heroin,, strippers/prostitutes, a goat, and a (very large)boat. He was not fired, he was just asked to leave. Which he didn’t for another 10 years, and then one day he said fuck it I’m out. Not that much different than pension eligible workers who continue to work, as they have reached KMA status. Pretty much every worker with a pension knows their KMA date. It also seems like a date to fear. I would totally expect the Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt and I will buy this company to try and can me before that date comes. Most places nowadays in the US with pensions are government/government related or are unionized (or both), and it would be hard to get away with that. Not much fear in those organizations. A couple of my aunts worked for the railroad in NY and at the time they were there, it was possible to save up your time off without limit. They and others like them never took a day off if they could possibly avoid it, banked all their time, and “retired” years early because their banked vacation was enough to take them to their pension date. That practice has since been nipped in the bud, as it kept essentially retired employees on the payroll for years who couldn’t be replaced without budget increases, but I bet it felt great. Depends. If you get in at the right time you’ve got millions or even tens of millions in stock. On top of that your current position would still pay more in compensation than 80% of other positions. You could try to chase startup paydays, but most of those fail anyway and require insane effort. It’s not a bad decision to just enjoy your high corporate salary at a position you’re comfortable in.
In tech, it’s pretty doubtful your base salary will be good enough for that to make sense. Other than Netflix, which pays all cash, equity is usually 25%-50% of your total comp. If you aren’t still vesting you’re getting drastically underpaid I’m in tech. This saying is about people who were with Microsoft when it blew up, not current employees who vest 600k worth of stock total over 4 years. If you’ve got 10 mil in stock, grinding out equity at another company becomes less desirable. We had a similar thing. I forget the Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt and I will buy this criteria, but certain people at a certain point received a small red plastic sign to put by the nameplate on their office door or cubicle wall. It had the similar acronym DFWMIFV (Don’t Fuck with Me, I’m Fully Vested). I don’t know that anyone really “used” it in that sense, though; more of a joke or just to point out long-time employees. I think I still have mine around somewhere. “Despite many third hand reports of Microsoft employees wearing “FYIFV” buttons or shirts, there is only one report of an actual “FYIFV” T-shirt, worn on the wearer’s last day at the company.”
The article has many citations, including the Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt and I will buy this 1989 Seattle Times article I quoted elsewhere, of “FYIFV” being a common saying around the company. I worked at Google in 2006.. we had a saying “Calling in rich” for when an early Googler abruptly quit after being there for years. And at Twitter we had a minor tradition of wearing a vest on your 1 year anniversary as that is your “vesting” day for options. Nerds are weird. =) Google was mostly a big company by then.. Twitter on the other hand wasn’t (I was employee 51).. I am working on updating my abandoned blog and part of that is a “Twitter Tales” section that includes all the random stuff that was interesting during my time at Twitter Consultants and executives outside the tech industry took this as a cautionary tale of giving away the business, some people just don’t have the work ethic to carry on into their 70s for a few million more. They seem to gloss over the whole $3T valuation result. It’s all about keeping more of a smaller pie.
I know a guy who made HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS from his Microsoft employee options throughout his career. He got hired as a software engineer out of university and worked there till he retired at a normal retirement age a few years ago. He never even went the Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt and I will buy this executive route, he just kept his technical focus his entire career. This isn’t a “fuck you” money kind of anecdote, but I worked with a guy who did software development on our team. He was the shy, quiet, unassuming type. Loved D&D, Tolkien, fantasy lore, etc. Very intelligent and brilliant at what he did, but liked to just keep his head down and do his job. We got along very well. I guess for some time he was going through some stuff, he found out he had ADHD and started taking medication for it. The change in his personality was absolutely remarkable. He really came out of his shell and started interacting with everybody, and sharing his opinions on projects. Instead of dreading team meetings I looked forward to them because this guy would unload with both barrels on any stupid idea management came up with. He just did not give a fuck, and it was gloriously cathartic listening to him pick apart idiotic proposals or suggestions. Anyway, he eventually left and started his own company. But man, for a little while it was great having someone that had no issues telling management what was what.
I have contracted twice at Microsoft. It was, by far, the Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt and I will buy this most toxic work environment I have ever been in. Did you know that at Microsoft, contractors’ emails have an “a-“ in front of their email. They’re called “a dash” employees. Internally, the FTEs called us “dash trash” Yup. about 40% of MS workers are contractors. They even patented one of my software inventions for touchscreen, but i’m trash. I have one friend who did contract work for MSFT around the time of of the Mac OS X transition. He told them to go away several times, but they nagged him to quote a price, so he told them his “fuck off, I don’t want the gig” price, and they took it. So, he did about a year and a half at $500/hour. I assume they treated him well, because his stature in the NeXT community was such that if he left on bad terms, they would find it exceptionally difficult to find anyone with more than a year of Objective-C experience to work for them at any price. Same. I contracted there for three years early in my career and it was super toxic. It was v dash by the time I got there, but it was still the same dash trash nonsense. I remember my first day there guy training me said “see those guys with the blue badges? Don’t talk to them and stay out of their way. If you get on any one of their bad sides you could lose your job instantly.” And everybody I worked with, even former colleagues who transitioned to FTE, talked down very derisively to the Orange badges.
My fiancé is v-dash and is suffering through their bullshit 18/6 rule, which means that for every 18 months an employee contracts, they have to take 6 months off. Microsoft implemented this rule because they were sued over not giving benefits to contractors, and instead of just giving them the Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt and I will buy this bare minimum benefits, they fucked everyone over. It makes contractors feel like disposable trash, and converting from v-dash to FTE is very difficult, or sometimes just straight up impossible because the FTE position doesn’t even exist within Microsoft. Microsoft even claims that the 18/6 rule is to incentivize hiring managers to convert contractors, but 99% of the time they just can’t because there are no open slots.
She’s in HR and absolutely loves her job, and she’s good at it, but it sucks seeing her be jerked around by both Microsoft and her contractor. I work in IT for a non-tech company and we follow the Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt and I will buy this 18/6. It’s quite painful when I have a contractor headcount that I can’t convert to FTE, so it’s like “50 first dates” for me – every 18 months, I have to onboard a new contractor, then by the time they’re finally getting into the groove of things, I have to go through the process again. It’s no surprise our IT systems is a house of cards and we’re not running at maximum efficiency. The 18/6 rule is because they got in trouble with the courts ruling that a bunch of contractors where actually employees. The point of contractors is that they aren’t employees and you don’t have to pay taxes and benefits for them. 18/6 makes it harder for contractors to claim they should be classified as employees. Not for many, many years now. It’s v- and they are called “vee dash” employees. a- is still around but very sparingly, I haven’t seen one in years. I think it stands for “associate” and is used for long term non-employees.
A-dash contractors still happen, they’re just really uncommon. If MS contracts with an outside company, where that outside company owns and runs the Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt and I will buy this entire project, those outside employees who come on campus are issued A-dash orange badges. Their org chart and chain of command is wholly the outside company, an FTE doesn’t manage or review them. I think the last ones I saw were tradesmen finishing off an MSN datacenter construction prior to final handoff. Very unlike the typical V-dash who are supplied by an outside vendor to fill an empty spot in an org chart, and are managed & assigned tasks by an FTE. Don’t forget about v- vendors that work onsite for years straight, in Microsoft offices, on Microsoft laptops, with Microsoft engineers and don’t get the same benefits, access, respect, or even a free two weeks of game pass In the awful southern school district I taught in they would say ‘Im in the 30/30 club. I’ve done my 30 years and can put in my notice and be gone in 30 minutes’.
Meant at Microsoft. This was from the Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt and I will buy this astronomical runup in the 90s when compensation included outrageously lucrative stock options. The term wouldn’t be recognized by anyone at the company today and it hasn’t been relevant for decades. Since the dotcom bust, Microsoft adopted the now-typical RSU compensation component and generally provides quite a bit under top-of-market stock compensation. This was a thing in the dot-com days too. A lot of times the company you worked at would get acquired by a larger company – and in that situation a large number of the founders and more senior employees would get their shares bought out, their options fully vested, whatever. One company I worked for bought a smaller company, and asked the Sr. Leadership team to stay on for a transition period of 18 months, after which point they would be free to go. This was kept mostly quiet but it’s very common, but they don’t want morale to erode immediately with the boss that everybody knows (and usually likes) to just bail, so they tie some of that stock to the guy finishing out the buy out period. “You get $8m now but if you finish the 18 months you get the other $2m” or whatever the numbers were.
Anyway you could always tell who gave zero fucks. Surprisingly, to me at least, there were more people who still showed up and did their jobs and worked at stuff like they didn’t just get life-changing money. One of the Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt and I will buy this wealthiest guys I know still came in and worked weird hours and did shit beyond his pay grade. I was in my 20s and he was maybe 30. I asked him “Hey Keith you’re worth like $50m that I know about, just the public stuff. Why are you still here coding at 1am?” He just shrugged and said “I wrote the code so I feel like if somebody else is going try and mess with it they’re just gonna fuck it all up.” When I was in the Marine Corps, we used “FUBIJAR,” which meant Fuck You Buddy, I’m Just a Reservist. It was used when working alongside active duty guys who thought they were hot shit, as a reminder that I get to go home at the end of the weekend.
This was a not uncommon thing in the Santa Bigfoot Christmas Rock Roll Believe Playing Guitar Shirt and I will buy this software industry back in the 90s. I worked at EA back then and some of those employees would have special name tags on their door that had FYIFV under the persons name. 14 year veteran on Microsoft vending (paid consulting, not full time employee). Lied to directly, years in a row about conversation to FTE status – the lies became the norm. It’s interesting to see this, as it’s never come up in my career. That said, most managers I came across were very direct to the point they appeared autistic assholes (while they werent telling me “you’re the next person i plan to hire,” and, “dont worry about it, I’ll send the email about you joining the team after the weekend.”).
