The most obvious benefit is it decreases inflammation, for example that’s why a lot of athletes take ice baths when they get injured. It’s said to also increase blood circulation, which can help heal many diseases. The increase in circulation is likely due to the blood circulating into the internal organs to keep them warm. Some people only do it for the endorphins. It became so addictive I was doing it daily. It definitely felt pleasant to me – after you acclimatize to it, the cold just doesn’t bother you anymore, besides in freezing temperatures you go numb pretty fast after submersion.

The reason I stopped, is because I also got into hydrotherapy on the other end – extreme heat. It seemed that daily ice swims raised my tolerance for heat, so much that I was able to stay in the steam room for many hours when most people couldn’t even tolerate 15 minutes. It was so extreme that many people told me I should try out for a world record, but when I did, even they said it was too dangerous.
