8 years is too long to stay at one place. You should be trying to find a new job every 2-3 years to increase your salary. Every time this question pops up, most people just tell you to leave. Im not sure if this is an American thing. Since 18.50 seems to be the starter salary I’d ask for 25$ or more. Then quit when you find a new job if they don’t follow through or say maybe next year Take it to your current employer and say what you said above: I like this place, and would stay, but we both want an employee focused on the job and not worrying about his/her compensation.

Fast forward 3.5 years, a promotion and two raises later and mastering company’s product line and processes, they turn around and hire a new guy in my department making more than me even after my $2.50/hr shift differential. Despite him being less experienced and me working circles around him. Management lets day shift get away with not getting anything done while expecting me to bust my ass on a 12 hour overnight shift, and to top it all off raises were frozen this year. So pretty much no incentive to stay besides the guaranteed overtime pay after 8 hrs and paying off my 401k loan. Lesson learned at this job – loyalty means crap, especially at a bigger company.
