Also various kinds of antivirus can monitor your web activity as well and report back to them. Something about that just makes me angry. Occasionally you want to move some money to your cheque account in internet banking to buy lunch, check your personal email, or check the latest Covid news or something. That can give you a bit of a break before you get back to work. I worked at this tech startup for about a year and things were going well. Then they employed this Russian security operations/IT guy who made us put remote management software on all our computers. First of all, who the hell trusts a Russian to do your security? That’s like putting the fox in charge of the hen house. Basically gave this Russian spy access to everyone’s computers including the CEO. Then soon after our background screen savers started having this warning about how the computer was being monitored. They also made us sign a long worded IT policy that they were going to monitor our laptops and potentially video as well. I started using a post-it note to cover the webcam. Then after that some computer process was asking for permission to monitor the network activity. I always denied it but it was quite persistent and asked 3-4 times a day. The IT guy started posting information about how laptop webcam covers can ruin the screen or something and to remove them for warranty purposes. Sure that sounds believable right… Anyway after that I had had enough of that crap and started looking for another job, but it took a long year to find another one. Once I left, 99% of the tech team left after just a few months. Only that security IT guy is left there now from the original tech team. Also I don’t think anyone else in the company liked their shitty policies either and started leaving in droves too. Their stock price also tanked from like $2 to 10 cents. So that’s a warning for any company thinking of doing the same thing. Justice motherfuckers.
