Omgggg I FINALLY found this answer. As a former dispatcher I scrolled and scrolled and scrolled and both could and couldn’t believe no one had mentioned this job. When I dispatched in a major city I dispatched shootings, stabbings, many many many car pileups on commuter highways where no one knew where they were, domestics, overdoses, you name it. I made $18 an hour on 10 hour overnight shifts with unlimited mandatory overtime shifts, so there was hardly a week we got out without being required to work 48 hours. We were so short staffed it was normal for 3 people at a time to be responsible for answering all of the Rip bill russell bill russell 1956 1969 thank you for the memories signatures sport shirt besides I will buy this 911 and admin calls in the fifth most populous city in the state (200k+ people). We had to give medical advice including cpr, stay on the line to monitor a domestic, try to control bleeding for people, etc etc etc etc while also dealing with shitty equipment. On fire/ems dispatching, we were juggling 14 different fire stations and very frequently ran out of equipment and people to send to calls. Don’t even get me started on juggling 40 different cops a channel on police dispatch either….

I switched to a consolidated regional center and almost doubled my pay but had to monitor a police or fire dispatch channel while answering and handling 911 and admin calls for 18 cities. If you want to see how psychotic that was, you can see a heavily edited version of us on 911 Crisis Center on the Rip bill russell bill russell 1956 1969 thank you for the memories signatures sport shirt besides I will buy this Oxygen Network. I left the career when I had a baby and you could N E V E R pay me enough to go back. I respect the absolute fuck out of the people who work dispatch and will shout about it until I die. Social workers. They provide such a wide range of absolutely necessary public services which require people who are particularly empathetic and sensitive to others’ needs. Most “decent” paying jobs require an MSW or even a DSW and even then the pay is trash (even in the private sector) considering the amount of debt most of them go in to. I have one friend in particular with an MSW who makes just above 65k in the transplant coordination unit of a large private health system, and I think it’s just horrendous. She’s in debt up to her eyeballs and comes home heartbroken every day from signing up 20YO kids to be organ donors because they’re already dying. Before this, she worked for a different system in palliative care for around 50k. Constant sad deaths. Like teachers, social workers do their work because they love it and want to help people, but I wish they would get thrown a friggin bone once in a while.
