Not as big a blunder as you think – the Purdue Boilermakers we’re fucking winners shirt and I love this not speaking German thing isn’t war related. Did your hosts tell you that specifically? It’s more because Germans have a reputation of visiting the Netherlands and speaking German at Dutch people, (seemingly) arrogantly assuming all Dutch people can switch into German, when English is usually the preffered second language. Especially in Leiden as it’s near the beach towns which attract a lot of German tourists. No, their language warning was not war-related. I forget what the plaque was for but it was war-related so we’d been discussing that just before, and I think I was mostly shocked that my brain could go from “talking about the war” to “and it’s better to speak English” straight to “here’s a handy German answer to the question you were asked; BTW let’s not notice that it was in Dutch and you don’t speak Dutch”. I felt like Basil Fawlty. I think the guy’s surprise was because of the language switch, especially when he realised I was English; he was very nice about it when I apologised, and said it was lucky he’d asked me such an easy question (something along the lines of “what’s happening over there?”). My BF’s was a mix of “she speaks Dutch??” and “OMG did she just upset him?”.

Got it! From how i read it, it sounded like you thought you had offended them somehow by speaking German. But it was just your impressive language skills! In October 2022, I went to Latvia in my first trip as a solo traveller. They didn’t have English menus so I tried ordering in the EU’s most difficult language and made a right fool of myself. They only did giant platters designed for two people – I had already eaten lunch. The above resulted in me being backed up with a solid 8 courics worth, so I was relieved to finally find a public toilet. After doing my business, I realised the lock wouldn’t budge. I had to throw my bag into the next stall and climb over like Steve McQueen in the great escape. My foot landed in the bowl – the last person didn’t flush.
