I was in college when Lyft and Uber were starting to get popular. Driving for them was super profitable. I remember quitting my job to work for uber because I earned double or triple my hourly wage. I went from needing to work 20 hours a week to only needing to work 10 a week to pay rent. I did this for almost 2 years until uber changed how they pay drivers. Depending on the location, it’s either calculated based on mileage or time, or a mysterious demand-based algorithm. Even better, not all locations (at least when I was doing it a couple years ago) will tell the driver upfront what the fare and pickup/destination location will be. It would just say “pickup 7 minutes away.” Luckily they changed that in my city, but it may still be the way it works some places. I started doing it at the height of the pandemic, in mid 2020-2021, and due to the small number of drivers I managed to make about $12-25/hour after costs, depending on day and time. Towards the time I stopped in late 2022 I was lucky to break minimum wage, after costs I actually had a net operating loss for the year.

I would make $50-75 a day if I worked my tail off from 11 in the morning to 9 at night. I would deliver $50 orders and make maybe $4. It was a little better back then (2019-2020) because they paid you for waiting, but that feature was taken away. Uber was a good side hustle for a while, but then they started slowly cutting the driver’s cut until now is almost not worth it. They have to pay customer service workers and IT guys to fix bugs too.
