It states that whenever there are two diametrically opposed positions, the middle one is always correct. But it falls apart under the most basic scrutiny. What is the center position between “death penalty” and “no death penalty”? What would a middle of the road policy even look like? In general, it’s hard to trust someone who bases all of their convictions on what other people think and feel, rather than what they think and feel. If someone’s politics are defined as, “I pick the middle between whatever the last two establishment voices I heard were saying,” I just don’t think that person has a lot of good judgment or integrity, and it more likely to be reactive than active. They aren’t in charge of their own life and morals. There are people I’ve encountered who are genuinely mostly moderate – they have done the work of interrogating the world and their own values, and genuinely believe that the solutions for making life better are a set of solutions that happen to fall somewhere in the middle of the current most commonly represented in media conversation. Those people I may not agree with but I totally respect, and see their place in the conversation. But they also have reasons why they believe what they do and will more often have an eclectic set of specific beliefs (“I believe that we should have wider access to Medicare but not full single payer for X, Y, Z reason” and also other beliefs that might sound more left or right) whereas most self-proclaimed “centrists” leave the work of democratic deliberation to other people and change their views with the wind, because they only construct their opinions from a place of being contrary to everyone else, instead of rooted in wanting a better world.

Every “centrist” I know has had pretty unwavering values and positions on political issues over time. Ive seen a lot more liberals and conservatives adopt more extreme values as time goes, while centrists tend to stay the same. I’d wager it’s because a lot of people that consider themselves on one side or the other tend to change with their party’s shifting beliefs/stances while centrists are labeled as such because they have their own opinions that they’ve formed without being heavily influenced by either party so they’re less likely to “change with the wind.” Definitely, I’d say centrists are probably more likely to have actual belief in government policies rather than just agreeing with whatever their ‘team’ decides Only agreeing with one party on all issues, which appears the norm these days, is less trustworthy IMO. It’s less in charge of your own values, because youre only listening to 1 group.
