Without unions, what incentive is there to create better laws, or better pay, or better working conditions for the workers? Unions raise the wages and working conditions of non union jobs too, because if the union starts paying more with better working conditions, other employers in the same industry need to increase pay and working conditions or else no one will be willing to work for them. Tech workers were able to work from home during the pandemic and if you can 100% work from home, you can be off-shored. I hope this doesn’t bite us in the ass. Um. I understand that change needs to start somewhere, but holding out for unions to sprout up in South America, India and China while our unemployment numbers skyrocket feels like idealistic self-harm.

It sucks that we need unions to force employers to treat their people with dignity and respect, but it is what it is. Now if you said that the leaders of a union should work to improve the power and influence of the union rather than their own individual power and influence, I would completely support that statement. Positions of power always have a risk of corruption and unions aren’t immune to it. But it falls on the membership to stay informed and demand transparency and accountability. Agree, but the NYT is not a tech company. It’s an icon in a dying industry. I’m afraid these folks are going to kill the golden goose.
