My parents were born just prior to the Poets of the Fall Logo Shirt moreover I will buy this war so not really boomers. Born during the depression, married in the late ‘50’s. They lived different. My dad was a railroader who for the first 10 years of his career would get laid off every year. My mom worked PT minimum wage jobs. Not a lot of money to go round. Half of our yard was a garden. We ate fresh veggies in the summer and frozen or canned in the winter. We all berry and mushroom picked in the woods. These frozen and canned. Dad hunted and fished year round. Our freezer would have moose, rabbits, partridge and fish in it. Beef was a treat. They would buy sides of beef if no moose caught that year. Sides of pork. Both often purchased with another family. The basement would turn into a butcher shop. As a kid my job was to crank the grinder for ground meat or make sausages. Dad made his own smoker. We make our own sourkraut and cure our own meat. A can of campbells soup in the cupboard was a treat. If you wanted cookies, you made them. They only had one car til my mom was in her late 40’s and working FT. The house I grew up in had only two rooms to start. Over 20yrs dad would add bedrooms as each kid was born. The biggest difference is they hardly used credit. I don’t even think they had a credit card til the ‘80’s. They saved money then bought. We didn’t eat out except for special occasions such as a McDonald’s birthday party or special treat. Vacations were always visits to relatives. Lots of big family picnics in parks in those trips. Compared to how my husband and I lived and how I see my adult children live, we all used tens of thousands of dollars in credit to get to the good life quick. Want a couch? Credit. Lots of restaurants. Next to no food grown and preserved. Two cars, both on credit. Vacations to exotic places. Again on credit. Mortgage equity seen as available credit and accessed. When I look back my parents, who worked hard for everything including food, they were free. I and my adult children are slaves to the creditors. I work for them. Most of what I own, eat or enjoy the creditors paid for and I slave to pay them back. We let this happen to our society.

I work in a factory now, in a more specific role that required more training and expertise. I make the same amount of money my father made when I was born, but without the benefits or the pension or the vacation time.
