Honestly, I’m not sure I could recommend this. But it’s realising that there are things worse than death. TW: physical abuse and suicidal thoughts. I was badly abused as a child. At one point, my mum was standing over me with a golf club. I was pretty sure that she was going to beat me with it. And at that point, I remember thinking that her beating me with it would be better than continuing in that situation. Either I would die, or I would be removed. That realisation was powerful for me. Death could be freedom. But also, I think the joy I have felt since getting out of that situation has helped. If I get to live this fucking brilliant life, full of love and fun and wonder, then I’m ok with the flip side being that I have to die someday. I have won the lottery in some senses, because I grew up in a horrific place and I have found my way out of it, to a reality that would once have been my wildest dream. Where I am safe and loved and have what I need. I would rather die than go back to how I grew up, so I know again that there is something that frightens me more than death. And then I know that I don’t want to be immortal. Life can be hard. It seems like the world is dying. I want to have a time and a place in history, not see through to the end of time. So I guess that means that I want my life to end somehow. Of course I want it to be peaceful and painless if possible, but I do want it to end. That knowledge brings a peace in itself.
